The Naniboujou Lodge & Restaurant

They're not kidding when they say no electronics. My cell phone never worked. Little tip the Lutheran Church in the town up the road has its Wi-Fi open if you have to go use it. The food was great. The room not so much. The staff was wonderful. If you really want to get away from it all this may be your place.

The Naniboujou Lodge has been on my list to visit during my North Shore adventures for several years. So glad I finally made it to this cozy and historic place this autumn to learn more about what the lodge has to offer from a friendly staff. Antoine Goufee, a French artist, painted Cree Indian designs over the walls and twenty-foot-high domed ceiling.of the iconic dining room, and many accents follow his inspiration throughout the property. Located 15 miles up the shore from Grand Marais, Naniboujou Lodge was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1982. In Cree, Naniboujou means "spirit of the outdoors/woods" and is a powerful but benevolent cultural hero who appears prominently in traditional storytelling.

This resort started as a private club in a remote location on Lake Superior about 100 years ago. It changed into a privately owned resort after the great depression. It is currently family owned and operated. Staff are doubtless very difficult to find in such a tiny community. The resort currently is open for guests Monday - Saturday nights. Two night minimum stay includes breakfasts and dinners. The dining room has a famous Cree inspired geometric paint design on a towering arched ceiling and a huge stone fireplace. Table service for meals is fine dining style, but the menus are set with all guests served the same meal (makes it work with few staff...) Sunday breakfast is buffet style. Visited the lodge in August 2025. The architecture is strikingly beautiful, and the view of the lake from the grounds is wonderful. However, if you are staying at the lodge be aware that the room walls are paper thin: we were treated to all of the nighttime sounds our neighbors made, including snoring, talking, using the toilet and washing their hands. The neighbors weren’t noisy, it’s just that the walls provided very little protection. We were also very disappointed with the Sunday breakfast. It was a self-serve buffet of granola, yogurt, sliced melon, and crescent rolls, along with paper plates and plastic cutlery. Disappointing considering the price charged for the included meals. Lastly, be aware that there is no WiFi (which they disclose on the website) and also no usable cellula

This Lodge is WONDERFUL!! We had a room in East wing and the lakeview is better than we had before in West wing. A 2nd floor room is a must for good view. The Lodge was built in early 1920's, bright colors, location is peaceful, plenty of space in rooms, bathroom is clean. No AC, no wifi, no TV, no frig, microwave, or coffeemaker in room. All that said....lodge does have a BEAUTIFUL dining room, friendly staff, many spaces to explore-sitting room/library, beach with plenty of chairs and a deck overlooking Lake Superior. The only drawback is they require booking as a 'package deal'. 2 nights, including 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts. Closed on Sundays.
