Outpost Motel

From the highway, The Outpost may look like a typical, somewhat dated, mom-and-pop motor inn. Don't let the first glance fool you.||The owners have put a lot of care and love into this place. The rooms have been updated and tastefully decorated. Our room was spotlessly clean and comfy. Our bed was great, the shower more than adequate (although the bedroom was a bit small). It was everything we needed for our one-night stopover, but with a charm and grace that was so much better than the chains we usually have to rely on.||Our one regret was that we didn't have more time to spend there. We stopped in for one night this past summer and immediately wished we could've stuck around for longer. The Outpost oozes charm and its owners' eagerness to share the region's joys. The best and most detailed information binder you'll ever have the pleasure of leafing through, "wake me up if the northern lights are out" doorknob hangers, and of course, Otis. Hoping to come back as often as we possibly can!

We stayed at the Outpost Motel on our way to Isle Royale. I CANNOT recommend this place enough!! It's clean. It has great Wifi (no cell service in this area). Holly (one of the owners) is the FRIENDLIEST (can we be best friends??). You have an AMAZING view of Lake Superior, and you just have to walk across the road to access the water. We did some night photography during our stay and overall had a great time. This is the perfect spot to stop if you fly into Minneapolis and need to catch the ferry to Isle Royale the next morning (it's about 30-40 minutes from the motel). Not a ton of food options around, but the town is about 8 minutes back up the road where they have a DQ and some local restaurants. Great location, owners Tod and Holly are so helpful! Beautiful beach right across the street for a bonfire, Adirondack chairs for leisure out front. Plenty of convenient parking right at your door. Close to lots of hiking, waterfalls and restaurants without the noise of town. Beautiful sunrise and sunsets.
