Harbor Inn Self Check-In Hotel

Took a chance on this property knowing it is in a transition/remodel phase, and we are glad we did. The location was excellent, the room was spacious and well-arranged (for sharing with our son and his significant other), and the bed and pillows were comfortable. We found the room comfortable and decor appropriate for our “not too fussy” taste. We’d definitely stay here again if we return to Grand Marais! We stayed in Room 9.

The rooms are clean and have upgraded decor. This should be called a motel as all room doors are located on outside and there are no amenities normally offered at a standard hotel- such as ice. The halls could use some upgrading. It’s quiet except I could hear snores from neighboring room at night. Nice view of lake across a Main Street with cute tables/ flowers outside of room doors. However the outside patio areas could use some cleaning.

We paid over $200 per night, and unfortunately this was the only place availablr. The room had a strong musty smell and there was clearly water leaking under the sink, leaving the floor wet. The bathroom was very dated and had visible black mold. While the mattresses were surprisingly comfortable, there were no mattress protectors and the duvet didn’t even have a cover—just wrapped in sheets. The ceiling fan also had no blades, making it unusable. Overall, this was a very disappointing stay. One star—I would not recommend returning.

Nothing too fancy but comfortable rooms with good amount of space. The real positive is the view of the harbor which is tremendous. The self check-in works well. No elevator, only stairs to second floor. Refrigerator but no microwave.

We stayed in room 10, it was very clean and newly renovated, beautiful bathroom, comfortable bed and a convenient little fridge. The location was perfect, we enjoyed beautiful sunsets from the beach straight across the street.
