this was great but the beds are very hard and no wifi and low roofs above the stairs.
It's a beautiful area with a great waking path spanning miles. Has good A/C, what we assume is well water from the tap, and a working bathroom/shower. The biggest downside is that the bathroom is in the basement and the stairs to get down are pretty steep with a very low ceiling- you will need to bend down pretty low while going up and downstairs (my mom in the photo is 5'7". I'm 6' and felt like I needed to squat down while going up and down). There's also a small wasp nest in the rafters of the deck, but they were pretty mild. A wasp was floating around my head for a while and was just ignoring me.
I stayed there recently, and it is wonderful. Aside from the din of traffic, it was very quiet outside of rush hour. There are lots of great biking/walking trails off the towpath, and lots of kayak launches as well. The kitchen is well stocked, but make sure to bring all of your own bedding (sheets, pillows, blankets, towels, etc). I wish they had a firepit as other lockhouses do for outdoor cooking/chilling. Plenty of space in the basement to keep your bikes or whatever you may have, through a separate entrance.
The Canal Quarters program is brilliant. Lockhouse 6 includes a full modern kitchen and has been retrofit with a modern bathroom. Otherwise, it's appointed mostly with 1950s furniture. It sits right on the Tow Path (obviously) and is also close to a short side trail with nice views of the river and the Virginia side. Keep in mind that it's a historic building. Stairways have low ceilings, and windows are single-glazed which I suspect warrants heavy blankets in the winter. Also keep in mind that it's not a hotel. Reservations are made online, and there's not staff onsite. But, it's a great way to spend the night on the trail.
We stayed here on a bike ride from Harpers Ferry. This Lockhouse had AC and a shower which we loved (and needed). An easy ride into Georgetown for dinner. Great comfy place, super convenient. Felt like it was in the middle of nowhere. The other lockhouses we slept in did not have electricity or water, so this was a treat.
