The Grey Whale Inn

My wife and I got married in Mendocino on Feb 29 2008 and had a reception at the Gray Whale. We rented all the rooms for our guests to spend the night and so we wouldn't bother anyone. We had a ripping awesome party that our friends still talk about now 17 years later.

This place is a bit quirky, but overall we really enjoyed our stay. We stayed on the top floor and the view from the patio was great. We had a perfect view of the sunset. It took several stairs and ramps to get to our room so you should keep that in mind if have any trouble walking. Ft. Bragg and neaby Mendocino are really fun and peaceful places to visit and the Grey Whale Inn was a good place to stay.

It has been 2 or 3 years since I was there last. The new owners are updating and fixing things, but I miss Mike and Sweet Pea. Okay, especially Sweet Pea. She was the wonderful, feline Guest Relations Manager. She visited all the guests and made everyone feel at home. ||The updates are nice, but some ultra modern decor does not always fit into the classic, old building. I told them to remove the ceiling fan in the Sunset room. It was too ugly to exist, let alone be allowed indoors. The yard cats however should be encouraged to visit with guests as, they add so much warmth to a place. It they do not add too much ultra-modern furniture it can remain a charming and welcoming place.||There are several great restaurants within easy walking distance. The room was acceptable and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom had no place to hang our towels. They do not have daily house cleaning unless you request it. It seems they are working on a budget to update this place. Not only the building, but the grounds need a lot of work. The reception area is only open during certain hours. We read in the book in the room there was coffee available in the mornings but we could not find it anywhere. It would be nice to have a coffee maker in the room. It also stated there was a refrigerator, microwave and hair dryer in SOME rooms. Our room only had a small refrigerator but NO hair dryer (which is not very expensive to provide) nor microwave. Hopefully, they will get it all together and make this B & B a place that is desirab

Thankfully we have our good memories of the Grey Whale Inn. The Grey Whale Inn was a very special place to us when we were “new”. We should have left it that way, a memory.||The Grey Whale just is not what it once was. The grounds appear unkept and the old building needs some TLC. It is indeed an old building being more than a century old.||The office is open from 9-12 in the morning and 3-7 in the evening. Breakfast is no longer served. Coffee is not available until 8:00 am. ||Attempting to travel down memory lane we reserved the Sunset Room that overlooks the ocean. The other uppermost floor room is the “Sunrise Room”. Upon check-in we were assigned the “Whale Watch Room” I thought maybe the room name had been changed. But no, it was a different room and not one that, after looking at it
