We had booked here but cancelled when the weather forecast turned rainy and windy for what would have been day 3&4 of our stay. (Packing up in the rain is not my cup of tea. I'm glad we found, and can afford, a last minute VRBO.) Did MacKerricher as a day-use visit (which was free, since the road past the kiosk was closed except to those with campsite reservations. Walked around the west loop, then took the path from site 81 to the beach, then back along the haul road to picnic near the whale skeletons at the kiosk. After lunch we hiked out to the tide pools and Laguna Point. The Surfwood campground was closed: they were/are in the process of installing metal 'bear boxes' (the wooden critter-cupboards are quite old).

We loved this campsite! Site 105 was nicely secluded. The campground had clean bathrooms and showers (coin operated) and it was very quiet and peaceful. A short walk to beach and beautiful sunsets also!!

Great campsites, not a terrible facility either, but due to the water shortage and the fact that they cart in water via cistern, they have to sometimes shut off the showers and half the campground water spigots are off. The ones that are on dispense water that is pretty rusty, almost pee yellow sometimes, so bring bottled water to brush your teeth with, as it's not clear if the water is actually potable (most local campers brush their teeth with bottled water for example). It's not clear if the water that is brought in is rusty, or if it's the pipes/water heater itself that is the problem, but comparatively it's a minor inconvenience. Ft Bragg is nearby and there's water gallons at the Safeway. Hopefully they get 'er figured out with the ol tax dollars, because I'll be back. Cool place!!

$10 for rv dump, there is potable water and 2 dump / fill stations Potable water is only labeled on 1 post though and it's on the opposite side....dumb

Very good campground ~ short walk to the beach. Lots of wildlife that will visit your campsite and there is more to be found in the tidepools. Trees did a good job of buffeting the wind but the trade is that we had to walk for a bit to enjoy the sunsets. Beware that some campsites will retain puddles if rain comes through. Campground and facilities were clean.
