Studio 9 Hotel Catalina

Travelled to Catalina solo for the weekend in the end of January and this time I booked the stay with studio 9 hotel. Definitely vintage vibes, spacious king room and very sweet staff made my time there awesome. Not to mention, I had amazing ocean front views as much as it possible since there is another building in front of the hotel. Bathroom was small but views definitely worth it Thank you, I’ll be glad to return with my spouse.

Highly recommended if you'd like to feel rooted in the remarkable history of the island — the hotel building dates back to 1892. Nothing fancy about it (no elevator even), but comfortable bed, ample bathroom, and we had a great harbor/ocean view from our room. Also good views from the large porch at the end of our corridor (there was also one on the floor below ours -- the hotel has 3 floors in all). Very friendly staff. On side street half a block from the beach, but much quieter than the parallel side streets which were closer to the bars, restaurants, and souvenir shops etc. We will stay there again next time we go to Catalina Island, an enchanted place.

Room - No room service, no air conditioning, ceiling fan did not work, WIFI connection was slow and dropped out often, the TV remote did not work, the key card did not work half of the time, there were no amenities (no coffee or tea service in the room and no microwave to heat water or food), No coffee or water in the lobby, there is a low-income apartment building next to the hotel so any sea breeze you get smells like marijuana, the toilet did not flush properly. Their is a security door on the ground floor to keep non-guests from accessing the hotel rooms and patio area, but the staff props it open during the day for their convenience and does not shut it at night so anyone can access the hotel (a drunk bum came into the patio area making a bunch of noise on my first night at 1:00 am).

If you’re the type who can roll with a few quirks, you’ll likely enjoy it. 🛏️ Atmosphere & Rooms • The building is older, but it’s clean and well-kept. • Rooms are small, bathrooms are small. (No room for dancing to your favorite song.) • Electrical switches are the old push-button style—nostalgic and they still work just fine. • Staff are warm, welcoming, and super helpful throughout the stay. 🧗‍♂️ Room Locations & Stair Notes • Third-floor rooms require tackling steep stairs, but the views from up top are fantastic. • King-size beds are located on the second and third floors only; ground floor rooms are limited

You get what you pay for, the hotel is priced on the lower side compared to other hotels in the area. We rented the cottage for three people and the bedrooms were small but a decent size for a night. A/C was strong and good! A restroom connected the rooms together and it was small. You could sit on the toilet and wash your hands in the sink but the restroom doors didn’t have any locks, which was slightly strange. Room is just outdated but the staff (can’t remember her name but it was an older woman with red hair) was friendly! And we enjoyed that the outside doors locked after a certain time, made it feel safer as our cottage was outside.
