Hotel Mac Rae

Great little hotel! Room was clean and we had a nice view of the bay. It’s central to downtown so it made it easy to walk around and get to places. Quite a few steps to walk up when entering, so keep that in mind if you struggle with stairs. Staff was very nice and accommodating with an early check-in when we got off the ferry. Continental breakfast was good as well. Would definitely stay there again.

I booked a stay here for 4 nights and the customer service was great, the hotel was extremely clean, high attention to detail, continental breakfast, and overall very quiet! I loved my stay here and would book again in a heartbeat. Not to mention it is very convenient, just a walk away from the ferry and in the middle of “town”. You are right on the beach. There are stairs and no elevator but that wasn’t a problem in the slightest. Great value for a few nights on the island. My bed was comfortable and the hotel provided everything I needed. Definitely recommend!

Good location, but the hotel was awful. We booked a "patio room" expecting it to be on the ground floor. There was no indication in the online description that the hotel entrance is up two steep flights of stairs with no elevator. We were there when it was rainy, and the stairs were slippery. The patio is a paved area on the roof -- stark and unattractive. The room was tiny. Fridge, but no microwave. Desperately in need of updating. Lumpy bed, mismatched furniture, stinky old carpeting. Don't be fooled by the pictures and the sweet historical story. All of its charm is in the location and the one lighted exterior photo online.

The weekend we were on Catalina, Hotel Mac Rae was nearly the cheapest room available. While no hotels on Catalina are a good value (sadly), the Hotel Mac Rae is an excellent choice. Room was not at all tiny despite being over 100 years old. Room was a bit spartan but very clean and well-maintained. Bathroom also clean and well-maintained. I had zero complaints. The patio could use some more plants and more shade but I sat out on the comfortable patio furniture often during our stay. Front desk staff and housekeeping staff were very friendly and helpful. They don't have a locked area for luggage before and after checkout but they do have a storage area that was obviously safe and worry-free. If you plan on being a beach bum during your stay this is an ideal choice. It is just one fl

The hotel was perfect for our trip to Catalina. The location is amazing, you see a view of the ocean the second you hit the bottom stair heading outside. Very close to all the bars and restaurants, with a gift shop and convenient store below it. We stayed in one of the older rooms inside the courtyard, and so we were isolated from all the noise below. Would definitely stay here again.
