Sonesta Essential Des Moines

A very pleasant and comfortable hotel on busy Merle Hay Road, not far from the mall, so the location is convenient and reasonably easy to find (especially for travelers who need a place to stay for the night or multiple days while traveling through Des Moines or in town for conventions or the annual state fair in the summer). It's quiet and easygoing, with hot (eggs, waffles, sausages) and cold (juice, yoghurt, cereal, some baked goods) breakfast served from 6-9 am. Coffee is available all day (thank you!). The staff are very friendly and helpful, especially Mike, Lucas and Shawn (as well as the woman who has been working in the late afternoon - I'm sorry for not knowing her name). Positive: The room was quiet since we got the side opposite of busy street. Negative: If you looked hard enough, housekeeping could have done a better job a sweeping the floor. Overall there was nothing to complain.

Great Stay at Sonesta Essential Des Moines Friendly Staff, Clean Rooms, and Tasty Breakfast!||We stayed at Sonesta Essential Des Moines while visiting Adventureland and had a wonderful experience from start to finish. The morning staff was especially friendly and very professional neatly dressed and welcoming. I appreciated that the same staff member helped with both check-in and checkout, which added a nice personal touch.||The room was clean, comfortable, and perfect for relaxing after a long day at the park. Breakfast was delicious, featuring waffles, sausage, eggs, fresh fruit, and more a satisfying way to start the day!||Overall, the service, cleanliness, and food made this a stay we’d gladly repeat. Highly recommended!

We stayed at Sonesta Essentials in Des Moines, Iowa, and while it may not be the biggest hotel, it absolutely has some of the best customer service we’ve ever experienced. Compared to what we went through in Columbia, Missouri, this hotel was a breath of fresh air. We were having serious car trouble (a repair over $1,800), and the staff here went above and beyond to accommodate us. Even though we had originally booked a smaller room, they kindly let us keep the room we already had at the cheapest rate—a gesture that truly showed their compassion and care for guests. The owner was wonderful and went out of his way to help me when my bag was stolen. Thanks to his help, I was able to get it back. That kind of support is rare to find. Let me first address the owner/manager: Please don't bother to reply with the same "form letter" response that I've seen on all your one-star reviews. You CLEARLY do not care about our feedback and you CLEARLY are NOT addressing and correcting the issues. THIS HOTEL IS A HEALTH HAZARD!! The room was FILTHY! It was obvious that the floor had not been cleaned for weeks, judging by the volume of MOUSE DROPPINGS. The next morning, there were MORE mouse droppings on top of the bath mat that we had only just put down the night before, indicating that they just happened during the night. The shower head was wrapped in duct tape. The halls are room reeked of smoke and weed. The floor was sticky. NOTHING was clean in this room. The place is falling apart. These are not quick and easy fixes...this p
