Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel

I chose this hotel because it was outside the city. It's about a 10-15 minute drive to downtown Des Moines and 15-20 minute drive to the airport. This hotel has a beautiful lobby and you get a "wow" feeling upon entering. The front desk has a friendly staff and check-in was quick. I took the glass elevators up to the 10th floor to the Presidential Suite. This suite provides ample room with a bedroom, dining room and living room. The shower was also roomy. The suite was very quiet and safe. The suite came with Executive Lounge access but the Lounge was closed. The suite also came with breakfast that was served down in the Lobby restaurant. After a long day on the road my friend and I were contemplating our options. I had enough points for a reward stay at a Marriott property and we were really just planning to get a bite to eat and a quick night's rest before finishing the drive to Chicago in the morning. Sheraton's are usually nice, right? Oh boy...||The hotel is basically in an office park. There's nothing wrong with that. However, it seemed a little ridiculous to pay $10 to park in a largely abandoned parking lot in the suburbs. Parking should be included in the stay at a property like this. Fine.||Check in went smoothly but wasn't particularly friendly. Status wasn't noted and we weren't told anything about property and amenities. We came for a football tournament. Rooms were okay. Initially they placed us in the wrong room (1 king no sofa vs 2 queens for 4 people). Fridge & micro in our room. We found used hygiene products in our room. Gross! Staff was kind but direct. Keep kids with adults. Breakfast was extensive so made the high price more bareable. When the bar closed, management offered our group an event space to keep socializing which was great. Well planned and organized fitness area. Pool was frigid. Would not recommend.

Positive: The staff was very friendly and the location was convenient to our purpose for being there. Negative: I was unable to get on the 'available' WiFi without first paying a daily fee, which I refused. I have stayed at cheaper hotels that offer free WiFi. The 'available' parking is a surface lot that costs an additional $10/day. I thought I was in Vegas.

My biggest problem with the hotel is that after I parked and walked all the way in with my luggage, they very rudely told me i needed to pit a parking pass on my dash. This is the dumbest thing a hotel can do to their guests. "Glad you're here, please go back to your car in the -4 wind chill!" Except she didn't say please, she be like, go do this. My room was very clean and comfortable. I stayed 4 nights for a convention. The meeting rooms are fine but the lighting is awful. Half the lights are burnt out, the half that work are every color. The cold handle of the faucet in my room was backwards. Things that seem rather simple to fix and would make a huge difference.
