After staying at the Proper Hotel the last two years for our annual Nutcracker Ballet trip, we decided to change course and stay at the Mark Hopkins. The two experiences couldn't be more different location and "vibe" wise, but I'm glad we chose the Mark Hopkins. We had a wonderful stay in rooms 1525 and 1507. Gorgeous views. The rooms were very clean, and the beds were comfortable. The favorite part of our stay was the friendly, helpful customer service we received from David at the front desk and Ric, the concierge. Coffee and dining recommendations in the Nob Hill area were spot on. We also enjoyed drinks and appetizers at Top of the Mark, make a reservation!
2nd time at the elegant old hotel. They are doing some matinence on the exterior but did not seem to interfere with the flow. We checked in late and Roy at reception was single handedly taking care of us while dealing with what looked like a large wedding. He very carefully explained all the changes since our last stay and informed us of all details. He graciously upgraded us.
Positive: Great quality as always. View was excellent. Negative: Understandably due to the age of the building, windows let a certain amount draft through the gaps of the windows especially during the storm. Walk in shower tended to let water out into the bathroom floor even with a mat.
Stayed for 6 nights, was hoping for a great experience because I usually find Intercontinental hotels to be very consistent and comfortable. This hotel simply doesn’t live up to the same standard. The beds and pillows are frankly bad and they don’t even provide water bottles. On top of it all, they charge about $45 a night for all sorts of hidden fees - this is after they already charge for “taxes and fees” when you book. Apparently, a lot of hotels in the city do this.
Nice location in Nob Hill with scenic views and easy walking distance to good neighbourhoods. Unfortunately the rooms are incredibly dated to the point where the handle for my shower came off in my hand. The top of the Mark bar was decent. I don’t expect much from hotel gyms but shockingly this one doesn’t even have a treadmill.
