Elgin Plantation B & B

Elgin plantation is just outside of Natchez close to town. Our hostess Ruthellen gave us takes well told about local lore and characters served up with a mint Juliip. The grounds and house are beautiful and have an interesting history. Ruth Ellen Is an old Natchez family and can tell you some interesting tales about the folks there. The accommodations are generous comfortable. The grounds are beautiful to walk in with camellias the size of trees. Lizzie gave us a good breakfast and conversation in the morning as well. We were made to feel at home and relaxed. Make sure you ask Ruth Ellen where to eat and what to see in Natchez. You can't invent a place or hostess.

The real thing. Nothing fancy, just a two level outbuilding with double level porches, an interesting array of bedrooms upstairs and a dated but clean kitchen and large long living/dining room. The furniture is mismatched and a bit shabby like a great-aunts place, with stacks of National Geographic's and a smallish TV. I can't recommend it enough.

My father grew up at Elgin. His family lived there from the 1930s until the early 1970s. When a family wedding took us back to Natchez, we found out the guesthouse was available for the weekend. This was a perfect opportunity for my 3 nieces (9, 11, and 13) to visit and see where my father grew up and where he and my mother met. We were a party of 8, 5 adults and 3 children and our experience absolutely could not have been better. ||||The house was very comfortable and Lizzie was an absolute dream. In addition to a wonderful breakfast every morning, she had a great wealth of knowledge to share with my nieces. Elgin is a beautiful home, and its owner (Mrs. Calhoun) is absolutely wonderful. The guest house, where my wife and I stayed, was well furnished and comfortable. Mrs. Calhoun is a delight and will give you a personal tour of the home. We were also served a delicious breakfast each morning by Mrs. Calhoun's helper, Lizzie, who was a delight in her own right. I definitely recommend a stay at Elgin when you visit Natchez.

Our group of 5 seniors (2 American, 3 British) recently completed a 2-week roadtrip of the Southern States. Elgin Plantation was easily our favorite place to stay - and we are unanimous in that! What an absolutely beautiful place in a gorgeous setting. When we arrived it was like driving up to the big house in Gone With the Wind. The separate b & b is really special indeed. We had the entire place to ourselves which offered loads of comfy space as well as two big porches complete with rockers. The owner, Ruth Calhoun, was so helpful with other suggestions, directions, etc. She gave a detailed and very interesting tour of her special home in the morning, after her helper, Lizzie, had cooked us a hot breakfast.
