Timber Trail Lodge

My son participated in an individual holiday stay program at Northern Tier scouting camp, and we decided to leverage a family vacation off of his visit to the boundary waters area. (It's a short drive to Northern Tier from Timber Trail if you are planning a scout trip!) |We were not disappointed. Timber Trail met and exceeded our expectations - especially in the winter. George is a tremendous and thoughtful host, and he took great care and concern to ensure we had a great stay. I brought my 82-year-old dad along, and he enjoy sitting on the screen porch, reading books, and watching the snow fall. Near Ely, MN and setup on farm lake, Timber Trail Lodge feels remote while still offering plenty of activities within walking distance of the resort. There are great ice fishing opportunities on the lake. We caught a ~28” walleye after some patience. Further, we enjoyed skating and snowshoe/xc skiing trails steps from our cabin. Visited in January 2026, do bundle up for the cold temps! But the cabins are a nice reprieve from the cold at night and we found them to be well cleaned and maintained. TTL is also setup well with activities we did not get to this time around, such as a dog sledding operation which departs from the lodge. Will have to check it out on the next visit. Lastly - the friendly staff made our visit easy and enjoyable.

It was our first time at Timber Trail Lodge in Ely We chose this place to bring back the memories from our annual camping trips at the BWCA many years ago. And we were not disappointed! This place is right on the Farm lake with pristine water and it feels like a perfect mix of wilderness and comfort. We stayed in cabin 3, adjacent to the office and it was cosy, spotless, and thoughtfully stocked with everything we needed: there were three beds and fully equipped kitchen. It was perfect for the two of us and our dog! What truly sets Timber Trail Lodge apart, is the hospitality. George, the owner, makes you feel welcome and at home and gives great recommendations for exploring the area around Ely. I absolutely loved our stay here. It was perfect. We had one of the twin bed rooms. It was just enough for what we needed. The property is beautiful. I stayed with my toddler. The staff is so nice and they have great recommendations. The kitchenette had everything we needed to cook. The bathroom was well stocked. The fire pit outside was perfect at night. The price was affordable. It's in a great location and a quick drive from all trails and town. Everything was clean. It was great. Stay here. It was well worth it.

Timber Trail Lodge is a true gem, perfectly located on the quiet shores of Farm Lake with direct access to the Boundary Waters. It's an ideal base for year-round adventure, offering everything from motorboats, canoeing, and hiking in the summer to unique winter experiences like ice fishing, dog sledding, and aurora watching. But what truly makes this place exceptional is the owner, George. He greeted us with warmth and, despite our late check-in and his tight schedule, went above and beyond to get a canoe ready for us and then instruct us how to use it, a generous gesture we deeply appreciated.
