Red Roof Inn San Marcos

There were roaches in the room. We didn’t see them until midnight and I couldn’t call the front desk because the phone in the room didn’t work. I had to call the corporate number and after some running around I finally got the main number to the hotel. The front desk clerk was nice about getting us another room but didn’t get much sleep after that. Hotel definitely needs an upgrade because everything is worn, peeling or permanently stained. I booked on hotels.com and the hotel had a decent/pretty high rating among other hotels in the area but this definitely didn’t meet the description from the reviews.

Positive: This location is a real nice spot. We were very pleased with our stay! Negative: The best could be a little more comfortable but other than that it was a pleasant experience!

After trying to get a Hotel in San Marcos, we unfortunately landed a room at the Red Roof Inn on I-35. This MOTEL was equivalent to the Bates Motel in the Psycho film. The room was filthy and smelled of urine and may have had hourly rates at some point in the recent past. ||||The bathroom was missing a shower curtain, and the floor of the shower was riddled with mold. I refused to shower let alone put my feet on the floor. The back of the restroom door of room 102 had scratch marks that looked like someone was locked in at some point and could not get out. And as if this and the holes in the motel sheets were not clues enough to leave, in the middle of the night (10:30 pm) Motel management provided a demented older woman who was locked out of her room the key to our room. Selected this hotel because reviews said the rooms were clean… the floors were FILTHY & after just a few minutes of my child being barefoot their feet were BLACK. I used a rag to scrub the floors. The hotel also reeked of food. It should be noted that there is no elevator at this 2-story hotel. So if you have a stroller or luggage, be aware.

No bicycles allowed on the property. Had to work with Expedia to get a refund. I am a bicycle tourist who has visited ~30 states and stayed at well over 100 motels in the last three years. This is only the second with a no bicycles rule. Fortunately, there are much better alternatives nearby. I have stayed at and can vouch for Motel 6, Days Inn, Howard Johnson, La Quinta and Best Budget Inn all very close in San Marcos; Super 8 also was nice despite having a sign that a car was required to rent a room. So I recommend bicycle tourists avoid this Red Roof Inn. It is not a national policy as other Red Roof Inns in San Angelo Texas, Manor Texas and in Wisconsin have all been nice. Also not documented in Expedia "policies" text - just an issue for this particular motel and owner.
