We stayed at the Chicken House at Rustic Barnyard in San Marcos Texas and it was exactly the peaceful reset we needed. It truly feels like a real farm stay, with open space, fresh air, and animals all around. Morning walks on the property were our favorite part. Seeing the goats and free range chickens and just slowing down felt so grounding. The Chicken House is cozy, full of character, and very comfortable. It feels like a private cabin in San Marcos but with the added charm of being on a working mini farm. The location is also perfect. It is near Texas State University and just minutes from the San Marcos River, so you get nature and convenience in one place. We’ve had the pleasure of staying at the Rustic Barnyard four times over the past year, and each visit truly feels like a home away from home. Tara and Jesse have been incredibly communicative and accommodating, ensuring that every stay is seamless and welcoming. The resort staff go above and beyond to make our visits special—dropping off goat and chicken feed so we can interact with the animals on-site. (We absolutely love the animals!) And the best one? KIKO! That sweet farm dog makes us feel right at home and helps us miss our own dogs a little less during our stay. The cabins are exactly as advertised—clean, efficient, and equipped with everything you need without any unnecessary clutter. The fresh chicken eggs and scratch-made biscuits are such a thoughtful (and delicious!) touch.

This was our second time staying at Rustic Barnyard in San Marcos Texas, and it felt just as special as the first. The first time we stayed at the Chicken House, and this time we stayed at the farmhouse and both experiences were absolutely wonderful. There’s something about this place that just makes you exhale the moment you arrive. It’s a true farm stay experience, peaceful, quiet, and surrounded by open space, yet still incredibly convenient. The property is near Texas State University, which made it perfect for our plans, and being so close to the beautiful San Marcos River is such a bonus. The farmhouse was spotless, cozy, and full of rustic charm. Every detail feels thoughtful and welcoming. It has the comfort you want when traveling, but with the character that makes it memorable.

Life at the farm...when can we come back?! We had such a fantastic time at the Rustic Barnyard. We stayed over Thanksgiving and it was simply marvelous. We stayed in the farmhouse and the sound of the rain hitting the metal roof was enchanting. There is nothing like sitting on the covered porch, drinking coffee, looking out at the morning mist as the breeze gently wafts in. Farm fresh eggs every morning was an added bonus! We loved walking the grounds, feeding the goats, and grabbing eggs from the fluffiest chickens imaginable. The "cowboy pool," though definitely cool this time of year, was refreshing and my daughter loved swimming in it! We were lucky enough to stay during my birthday week last month and had an amazing time! The owners of The Rustic Barnyard go above and beyond to give you a 10/10 experience. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by their pup Kiko who led the way to our cabin, showed us around, and checked back in on us throughout our stay. We also got to feed the cute little goats on the property, watch the chickens strut around, and discover some other local wildlife. During our time in the area we went river tubing, shopped in the downtown, and tried out a few different local restaurants. If you’re ever looking for the perfect place to getaway for a few days in San Marcos, this is the best place to be!
