Moderate hike, about 4 miles long. With the foot bridge washed out in 2022, it has not been replaced. So you have to go in at lava creek picnic area, and walk in and walk out the same way. There are buffalo in this area so just keep a close watch. We didn't see any bear sign, but that's not too say they aren't there. Once you get in about 2 miles, you will start to see mammoth, and it's quite a sight. On this hike, you are never really far from the main road, but you will have to be a mountain goat to get to it. Bring plenty of water, like lots of water. The trail is not bad going in, mostly downhill, but she's got a surprise for you on the way out. You don't realize how steep it is until you head back out.
