Our family spent a week at Yellowstone National Park during January of 2026. It was magical. The landscapes are breathtaking and it is so wonderful to see so much wildlife. We stayed at the two lodges that are open within the park and we took advantage of half day tours offered by Xanterra, the company that also manages the lodging and dining. The staff were attentive and helpful, the tour guides were excellent. Xanterra offers a variety of tours that include wildlife viewing, snow shoeing or cross county skiing, as well as going to many beautiful places within the park. Prices are reasonable and the vacation was highly enjoyable. We are so lucky that Yellowstone National Park and its ecosystem are being protected.
The park is magical in winter and hotel enhanced the experience. Wonderful decor, well done rooms, very comfortable. Pleasure to sit in lobby or room. Easy walk to geyser. Restaurant food very good quality but be prepared for long waits for food; short of staff so we opted for breakfast buffet. Didn’t have that option for dinner.
The rooms were small and needed more space for storage (clothes, personal items). The menu was the same every night (four nights for us); more variety, especially for families, would be helpful. Disappointed that proficient guests couldn't play the very prominent piano. There were delicious cookies and cider in reception every night, and the Fireside Station had very good snacks and sandwiches. All that being said, there is no better place to cross-country ski among the thermal features than right here! It's the only place to stay during the winter in Yellowstone.
The snow lodge was beautiful, the Xanterra organization top-notch, though the cabin rooms were old-seeming and not prettily situated. Staff everywhere were great. A beautiful x-c ski experience past thermal features and bison. However negotiating our way around the various out-buildings, walking or skiing, took some effort before we were on a consistent trail. Nice to be away from the crowds in a cabin, but the lodge rooms themselves looked beautiful. Wonderful to be in this park in the winter vs during summer mayhem!
Rooms were adequate but service spotty - high noise level and spotty housekeeping; 5 night stay and barely 2 days housekeeping (ran out of soap the final days) Service - rental shop personnel, tour guides and drivers were outstanding. Restaurant service (except hostess) was very below average at all meals (breakfast and dinner) - staff needs to be re-trained for customer focus and attentiveness. Food selection limited and simply okay. Location - could not be better for Winter visit.
