Howard Johnson by Wyndham Salem Hotel & Conference Center

Do not recommend staying here. We just wanted a room with a bed & shower for the night and breakfast in the morning as we were driving through to Florida. Worst hotel we have ever stayed in. We were the only ones checking in and it took forever. Person working the desk was carrying on a conversation with someone on speaker while doing the check in. Entire place is rundown and in need of significant renovation/update. The room smelled. TV didn't work. Phone didn't work. Went for breakfast at 6:15 (supposed to be ready at 6) and the entire lobby & dining area was dark with no one at the desk. Only good thing was the location is fairly close to some restaurants so we could get dinner & breakfast. Will never stay here again.

This was obviously an older hotel given the rooms are accessible from the outside. The view from the room and front parking lot were beautiful. A bonus to the stay here. The price of the room, $68.00 (plus taxes) was very reasonable for September 2025. The place is older and you can feel this. If you want a room for a night and aren’t expecting a five star experience this hotel fits that bill. We did not stay for the morning breakfast so I cannot speak to that. If price is key to you this is a place to stay. If modern amenities is your thing, you might want to select one of the other hotels in the Salem VA area.

Let's start with service or lack there of. The lady checking us in rushed through check in. Not once bothering to even listen to me. Gave us room key for a room that was out of order door battery was dead and room could not be opened. Went back to talk about it she was like fine I will change rooms and handed me new key. Then we get in room.. no coffee pot. Fridge broken standing water in freezer and fridge. ONLY 1 pillow on king sized bed. Broken knob on microwave but it did work. Floor was dirty with food crumbs . Outside our door was a mold covered fire extinguisher with broken glass door . A bird nest inside,other missing light fixtures with wires exposed also had nest inside them. Fire alarm goes off at midnight. I get up to check things out and talk to the night Auditor about a few

The room was the worst not clean! We experienced roaches and spiders. There was only one towel and no cups for the room. The carpet and counters were sticky not sure why. The building itself had structal damage visible under the second and third floor walkways with exposed rebar showing, please see photos of damage and no breakfast items! We had stayed here before and it was not like this. The night guy however was nice and friendly. The day front desk staff guy was not. I asked for a partial refund because the room condition and lack of breakfast, he told me all they had to serve to meet that requirement was coffee and one other item. I told him the sign at the entrance states full contiental breakfast but he didnt care and refused to partial refund me or work with me.
