Downtowner Motel

Our annual motorcycle trip with the boys took us through Houghton and who ever plans that year's ride tries to book smaller independent motels because at the end of the day we like to hang out front with a motorcycles and socialize. We booked six rooms.||||This place has a great location. Nearby is the Keweeenaw Brewing Company and a bunch of locally-owned restaurants and a coffee place just a short walk away.||||I'm not a clean-freak by any sense of the definition and when I review a hotel I always keep in mind the price point so where it's possible I will give a small mom & pop place a much better review than a full-service Marriott. This motel was probably built in 60's or so and I really don't think it's been updated since. I had to laugh when we entered the room as the furniture was all "retro " but upon closer inspection simply old. I agree with other posters, the bed was awful and so was the AC unit. For the traffic this place gets it wouldn't take much to upgrade the basics. On the plus side, the location is very good, close to food and drink but next time I think I'll recline my car seats and sleep better.

We love mom and pop motels. We don't need a ton of amenities because we usually just need a place to sleep. Unfortunately, this was not a place for that either. The decor in very dated which doesn't bother us. It's actually sort of cool. However, one of the 2 beds was also dated. It was horrible and it sagged in the middle. The parking lot was loud and busy with people coming and going. When the bar closed people gathered in the motel parking lot conversing loudly. Then at 4:00 the city decided to plow the curbs for a good half hour. Scrapping and beeping back and forth.( not the motel 's fault but still a factor). Then the housekeeper tried to come into the room at 9:30. Just uses the key and opens the door while we're sleeping. The dead bolt doesn't work but we least had the chain on. T

My son and I stopped just up the street and were quoted $154 for a room for the night which we thought was crazy for just two double beds. We pulled into the Downtower, needed to go to the bar next door to pay for a room which was $69.00 +/- . We though the room was clean and cool and everything worked fine. The TV had great channels and air was great. You can't get anything for that kind of money any more. l stay in a lot of hotels and if you just need a good place to stay for a night or two it is everything you need. Simple and easy and clean. Parked right by the room too!

Stay here every time I visit my son. Always clean rooms, clean towels and comfy beds. My only wish is that there was a mini fridge. Having to lug a cooler around kinda sucks. But loved being able to use my Netflix account there. Made it just like home. I will be back next time I visit my son
