Courtyard by Marriott Portsmouth

Clean and super nice staff. Just didn’t like the no continental breakfast at all, no room service for stays less than 3 days. No extra towels and when asked had to go get them instead of them bringing to our room

Typical courtyard which means I don’t really get the value proposition relative to other offerings in this value range. Good sized room, clean in our experience, shuttle to downtown a handy feature. Guest services wound up a little tight and lack of complimentary breakfast, adequate lobby coffee, etc chafes at me a bit. Bistro food ok but of course costs real money, and comp provided for my top status not enough to cover my and spouse’s very ordinary needs. Staff policing common areas for scofflaws, meaning anyone not actively eating a paid meal, felt a little over the top. So if you grabbed a sandwich elsewhere and hoped to eat in the hotel count on sitting on your bed to do so. I am so over this chain. Oh well.

Stayed there Oct 6th. Loved it. Great place. Friendly staff. Super comfortable beds. Honestly as a Hilton Diamond member trying to make Lifetime Hilton Diamond it made me think Marriott might have a better mousetrap (Hilton is far from perfect). Why the 1 star? I received an upgraded room at checkin. What was the problem? I got my bill and was charged an extra 73$ My two travel partners were not upgraded and got normal rooms even though we arrived at the same time. When I was told I was in an upgraded room, I said "Great!". There was no talk of any price differential. My coworker stated he clearly heard the lady at the desk nicely say "we are out of Kings so we have you in a suite". Stayed at the Courtyard from the 21st to the 22nd. November. Overall, things were good, bar service was okay, food was okay, and check-in was fast. The restaurant service was actually really good. But the checkout at 6 a.m. was terrible. The woman on duty had an attitude from the moment I walked up she was rude the whole time for no reason at all. I didn’t give her any attitude; I just wanted to check out make sure my BONVOY number is there and go. I chose not to argue and just leave, but it was really unpleasant. Everything else was fine, but that checkout experience was awful.

Reservations mean nothing here. Prebooked and prepaid a King Room 2 weeks before my stay. Show up and they say we’re out of Kings, offered me a double queen instead. I asked what happened to the Kings as I already fully paid, front desk said they oversold but had a list of rooms on a stickynote with rooms she “wasnt sure” of and could check if they were occupied. What do you mean you’ll check like you would just knock and say hi is anyone here? Terrible system. Want to know who I’ve never had that issue with? Any Hilton brand hotel. Barista for starbucks was great in the morning though.
