Tres Papalotes

I stayed here in July of 2019. The campsite is large, open, and flanked by ridge lines on two sides. The drive out is not too difficult, but high clearance vehicles are recommended. 4 wheel drive could be required if recent rains have torn up the road. The main reason I like the campsite is that it is remote. Most folks aren't going to make the hour-plus drive from the ranger station to get there. Additional perks are; the Road to Nowhere is nearby, it is very quiet, there is room to maneuver adventure/overlanding trailers near the canopy, and night star photography/gazing is great. There is a small house(?) ruin in the area and non-drinking water was available at the time of my visit. Gnats and flies were very nearly successful in hauling me across the border, though. Wonderful campsite, but plan plenty of time to get there. It's one of the easier 4WD/high-clearance only sites, but it will take you 1-1.5 hours to get there from the Ranger Station. PROS: - You'll be the only ones for miles around - Great views anytime of day - Compost bathrooms at the site - Big enough for a few rigs - 2 covered picnic tables - Close to the Road to Nowhere - The Road to Nowhere and the Lower Shutup are both nice hikes, and since they're considered roads, you can bring your dog with you. CONS: - It's a VERY long commute if you want to explore anything outside the park - The road conditions can get bad quickly with a good rain - The road to the site crosses a dry river bed a few times and it's not always obvious which way to go Bottom Line: This is a great campsite, but

My friend and I got here late one night in June of ‘21. The battery in the truck died the first night. It was an old bad battery. First time having a problem with it and boy was it a problem. We came in late around 11pm so we skipped the check in at the ranger station thinking it would be closed. We should have stopped. Luckily we had about a few days worth of food and water. On the 4th day we were planning on trying to hike back to the ranger station which in my estimation was about 17 miles, we were lucky enough to be found by a guy riding a dirt bike through the area on his way out to the road to nowhere. We were going to try to walk 17 miles in 100+ degree heat with about 6 bottles of water each. We probably could have died. There is a tank of water out there, but we didn’t have filter

Was there in the second week of June. Site look wonderful! But when I got out the flys were terrible, I had to get my bug proof hat, as the flys were so aggressive. Probably because of the full water tank there. Which added to the visual beauty. The site itself if large and plenty of room maneuver. The road in is rough but never needed 4x4, but my jeep is high clearance which helped.

Remote, quiet, perfect weather at the end of January. You’ll be the only one around for several miles. Enjoy the silence, and the brilliant stars.
