It was a clean and safe place to stay. The caretaker keeps the place in order and shares the rules for the hikers. If you follow the rules there are no problems. Like another review posted there are no pets allowed, no alcohol/drugs, and early lights out but this made the stay nice. There are others hostels in town if these things don’t work for you.
Years ago the place was a great place to stay as you came through the town on your journey. I recently stayed and they have so many restrictions that I don't care to stay again. I stayed there for trail Days and on Sunday morning when I had hoped to sleep in and relax a man came around around 9:15 telling everyone to pack up and leave. I was trying to have a quiet time and drink my coffee. Forget that I had to pack up and leave. Even a hotel gives you till 11:00. When I had signed in to stay no one said you had to leave early on Sunday morning. I'm not sure if this particular person just wanted everyone to leave or if that's the new rules.. next year for trail Days I will join the rest of those at tent City. I understand there's two sections one for quiet one for rowdy. I can go to the qui
I love The Place and have stayed on two trips: both an AT thru hike and a TransAm bike ride. Bayou even made special accommodations for a friend of mine who came down with a stomach bug. The rules are strict, which derelict hikers often detest, but compliance buys a very peaceful night in a clean space in the center of Damascus. No pets, no drugs/alcohol, early lights out. Easy. If you want more freedom, there are other hostels in town.
*updated because apparently they can't read also! AS STATED CLEARLY BELOW! I AM CURRENTLY RIDING THE TA!!!* I am an AT hiker and TA cyclist and have stayed here in the past and loved it. I came in today on a motor assisted bicycle, because I'm now disabled and also terminally ill, and despite the fact that I am on the TA doing a cross country awareness and Petition campaign for chronic pain patient rights. Their "host" took one look at my setup and flat out told me he wouldn't accommodate me AND when I asked if he could suggest anything he blew me off on that. Back in the days when I triple crowned on the AT this would have NEVER happened. That is not a very Christian attitude and I am thoroughly disappointed in a place that I used to love (I even volunteered with the church during trail
Caretaker turned me away on Tuesday before trail days because I had "driven" into town. I guess it did not matter that I was catching a shuttle from Mt. Rodgers Outfitters on Wednesday, or spending money in Bobo Mcfarlands, or Joes Tacos after returning from my section hike. This place looks nice, but the caretaker as the other review states is not nice.
