Crazy Larry's

I reached out to Larry before arriving in Damascus to confirm a place to stay, and he knew I was coming. However, upon arrival I was denied accommodations. Despite the listing describing it as a “hostel,” Larry made it clear that it was his house and not an open-door hostel like most along the Appalachian Trail. His public image doesn’t match the experience I had — the atmosphere did not feel welcoming or consistent with the spirit of hospitality most hikers find in Damascus. The place is very bare-bones, and I personally would not recommend it to other hikers looking for a true hostel experience. There’s a reason folks call him “Crazy Larry,” and after my encounter, I understand why. I’d suggest choosing one of the other hostels in town that better reflect the open, supportive community

I didn’t stay at Tow’s. I called asking for phone numbers of shuttles who could pick me up at a parking area because I had to tap out of the hike. |My call dropped and I couldn’t reconnect. ||A few minutes later, Larry texted me asking how he could help. ||He went far above and beyond texting me phone numbers and even calling some land-based numbers since I had virtually no cell service, only text service. We finally got a ride out. ||Tow’s was a breath of fresh air in a world of seemingly little customer service. ||If I’m back in the area, I’m stopping at Tow’s.||First class!! Larry saw me sitting at the gas station next to my bike while I was looking on my phone for a place to stay. He invited me to stay at his house for the night. Donations are welcome. Clean room, shower, AC and laundry. He’s such a great guy. Very nice. Close to two gas stations, Subway and diner. Near Creeper Trail.

Stayed at crazy Larry for one night. A bed and breakfast for only $40 can't be better. First day, had long and fruitful conversation with Larry over different subjects including the history of hostels. Well he knew almost every hostel "managers" that I asked him about. The bed was comfortable and he was very helpful suggesting resupply and restaurants around the town. One of the best part of this hostel is that the people bring all sort of foods, cadies, ... for the hikers and leave it in the front area of the hostel, free of charge but would be nice if you could pitch in a few dollars to help supplying more for the next hikers.
