It takes about 30 minutes to reach this campground from the base of Mt. Diablo. Keep in mind that the gates close at 7 p.m., so you won’t be able to enter or leave after that time. Each campsite comes with a designated parking spot, a BBQ pit, a picnic table, and a storage box. Some sites are well-shaded while others have little to no shade, so it’s worth checking ahead depending on your preference. The restrooms and showers were very clean and conveniently located, not too far from the sites. The views were stunning—especially at sunset, which was definitely a highlight. The nearest Safeway is about 30 minutes away, so plan accordingly. Overall, we had a great experience here and would recommend it for a relaxing getaway.
The sky kept changing colors every moment as the sun went down, and it was so breathtaking I couldn’t stop pulling out my camera. The picnic tables were super well set up, which made everything more convenient. We brought a fire pit, but since the fire risk was high that day, firewood wasn’t allowed. Luckily, we had a few gas burners and a gas heater, so we were still able to enjoy camping well into the evening. At night, it was pitch black with zero light around, so having plenty of lighting is a must. The trails were gorgeous, but the biggest downside was the dirt ground—when the wind picked up, the dust got everywhere.
Used the site number 4 for a 1 night trip. Site 4 has a large driveway just for this site. I think you could easily fit 3 cars in it. The site itself is not that large. It's very close to the neighbors and your see site 34 behind it which looks huge compared to this site. But it was just me and my kids and we have a tent on our truck so we didn't need the tent spot but easily looks like it could fit an 8 person tent. I wish the storage had a door but I guess someone broke it at some point. Two pit toilets without running water are nearby. There is a water spigot at the campsite by the road.
Site #18: Pros: - site right across from "the sunset spot" - water spigot at site - shady site - this site has pull thru, parallel parking. Some others had back-in or loop. - public bathrooms had light at night, and soap - individual bathrooms - sinks outside bathrooms for washing dishes. There's even warm water, if you wait long enough - showers (did not use -- too cold outside for showers, when we went) Cons: - part of the parking area for this campsite has low tree branches, see photo. I'd say tall vehicles'd be limited to max length of about 26' (which is not necessarily a con since the reservations site says max length 20'). - parking slopes slightly upward toward campsite (passenger side) - ground around the fire pit is sloped - fire ring's really high. Hip height, on me. Forget ab
Had a most excellent experience at Juniper Campgrounds. The grounds were very clean and well kept. No garbage was left lying around or noticable vandalism to the foliage or facilities. With the water shortage the constructed shower and restrooms were locked but very clean and sanitary portables were provided. This is an excellent camp for the stunning sunsets being on the West side of the mountain. Sitting just above the cloud line, early morning views are also awe inspiring. Temps are great in late August to early October. No problems with scavenger critters in the night but locked food and supplies in the car just to be safe. Rangers make regular patrols throughout the day until sunset so I felt very safe leaving items alone while I went hiking. I would definitely recommend these campgro
