I honestly expected this hotel to be run down based on some of the reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised. While the furniture, floors, and walls are definitely old, the hotel was clean and it’s clear that housekeeping does a good job maintaining the rooms. The building itself has a lot of character. The lobby feels very historical and gives you the sense that you’re staying somewhere with real history rather than a modern chain hotel. They also have a very old elevator, which is pretty cool to experience. It definitely adds to the historic atmosphere and you can feel the age and energy of the building when you use it. The balcony was a nice feature and it was great to be able to look out at the surrounding area. The location itself was fun to explore. There isn’t a huge nightlife scene

First of all, I was charged $327 and 307.90 for two nights for a total of $634.90 when my bill here clearly states $591.80. Next, we were super disappointed with our stay and tried to leave early and were told we could not. We were there with our two college aged kids for our niece's wedding. The hotel site does not list bed sizes in the room description, so I didn't know if our two bedroom suite was going to have queen or king beds, but I was shocked to find two double beds. There was no air conditioning because the hotel had switched to heat earlier that week. It was 74 degrees outside and even hotter inside. We tried to open the windows to get a breeze and they were screwed shut. They sent up a maintenance man and he unscrewed them only to discover the windows were broken, would not sta

Positive: The historic nature and quaintness of the hotel. Negative: Not really

This is definitely not a luxury hotel, but if you like historic charm with history, this is the place. The rooms have seen better days, but the beds are comfortable, the rooms are clean and, for the most part, quiet, and every room we've stayed in has a small kitchenette. Perfect location in downtown Placerville. My favorite thing is sitting on the balcony in the evening, people watching, and having a glass of wine. The employees have always been pleasant and helpful. Oh, and if you like ghost stories, read some of the guests' diary entries; you just might want to sleep with the nightlight on!

Really great historic hotel in the middle of town. If you're not into a little vintage adventure, this might not be the spot for you . The elevator is fun. Maybe there are ghosts? We stayed in the Mark Twain room, and really enjoyed it.
