It's one of many frequent stops around the state as I spend every summer driving aimlessly around the mountains meeting on cool Coloranan after another. It can be hard to find a campsite. I get a very strong (-94 db) Verizon 5g signal up here. The road like so many others is extremely bumpy with a couple large rocks sticking through the middle of the road. There is both a developed Campground as well as dispersed camping. Depending what site yer at you can actually see BV from above. Needless to say I highly recommend.
Be very careful camping here. Shooting in a camping area is not tolerated (allowed by NFS), but people who think they know better start firing away. Ricocheting bullets! Bring water and shade. I would not recommend this area for families.
Beautiful, clean, lots of great trails to ride and hike. Plenty of eye candy to photograph. Perfect vantage point to photograph sunsets and the Collegiate mountains. Not too far from Buena Vista. Dog friendly, nice picnic areas, clean outdoor privvies.

Roving gangs of cursing marmots run roughshod upon the land!

Preserved as it has been for tens of thousands of years since the glaciers receded and the first people, the native Americans, lived here and cherished this incredible place as their sacred home. Most notably the Ute Arapaho and Lakota peoples. Who wintered in this area on the east side of the Arkansas valley as it was milder with less snow pack and abundant game and pinion trees, which produced pinion nuts. Which were a staple food to most. Often one can still find traces of their incredible lives in this incredible place that they considered very sacred. As well as the Spanish explorers and early white settlers. And as t
