Big Alkali Fish Camp

The fish camp cabins are gone due to the 2019 flood. They were ultimately torn down and removed in 2023. Although the cabins are gone, you can still camp at Big Alkali. There are two concrete pads, which is very helpful for those in wheelchairs or struggle on uneven groundand. about five gravel pads. Each campsite has electric hookups available. While there is electric available at Big alkali, there is no water. The state of Nebraska Game and Parks added a new pit toilet in the campground in 2024. There is also an older pit toilet located near the boat ramp. The campground is almost completely shaded by mature cottonwoods. Additionally, there are about five pads that border Big Alkali lake. We went to Big Alkali with our boys every year over Memorial Day weekend from 1990 through 2001. We decided to go back this year with our daughters-in-law and grandkids. Not much had changed in 17 years! We still had to walk through water to reach the office. One of our cabins had been flooded the day before. One door wouldn't shut so the office had some guy come over and cut some of it off. He said it was that way 3 years ago when he stayed there! One microwave didn't work. One stove wouldn't light. A cabin for 4 people had only 1 small pot to cook with. The addition of showers and flush toilets was nice, but there was not a dry spot to stand and dress after the shower. Heading north from Louisiana in July, this was the first place that it was cool enough to spend the night on our very first RV trip. We've bought an RV now and seriously hope that all RV campsites are as lovely as Alkali. A small sign pointed to campgrounds down a gravel road so we decided to follow it, having no reservations. It was way off the beaten path in a remote area of Nebraska and right on a beautiful lake. The manager was quirky and helpful. The facilities were more than adequate. Each camp site was large and the grounds were not crowded. Our site was next to the lake, giving us and our 2 dogs a feeling of privacy in the wilderness. We loved it!

It isn't nice, it isn't fancy, it isn't a fancy hotel, or the type of camping you see on TV. The best part is the location and the rustic feel. I showered and wore sandals, I backed up and slept in my boat, had a nice place to grill some hot dogs and I was thankful for a place to park for a few nights. If you are a city slicker who has to have nice things then I would not stay here. But if you like the experience with nature and don't want to spend an arm and a leg in hotel expenses or spend your money on gas, I would recommend staying here.

I have been going to Big Alkali Fish Camp for 5 years. This is the first year we did not stay overnight out there and thank God! The bathrooms were disgusting to the point my friend used the mat from his truck to stand on while he took a shower. One of the 6 adults that I saw sitting in the shade at the concession stand could have easily taken a power washer with some cleaning solution and sprayed the bathrooms down a few times a day. Plus they had a mean dog out there that had it gotten loose very easily would have bitten someone. I will continue to stay in a hotel in Valentine or Lord's Ranch Resort if this is how the fish camp is going to be run.
