Viking Motel Detroit

Positive: location, close to my travel destination Negative: heater broken, the whole place felt like it was held to together with duct tape. stuff was just painted over, no trim, electric sockets not working, absolutely bare minimum everything.

Decided to stay here for a short trip over the weekend. On a tight budget, this looked like the best option especially when seeing reviews on Booking.com, which is where we booked through. Upon arrival our room was shockingly disgusting, the TV was caked in some clear sticky residue… went to use the bathroom, the toilet was covered in feces and urine.. I then come out to find a gigantic blood stain on the sheets. At this point, we had enough and already started booking another location. We then went to the front desk to return the key and voice our concerns. The owner tried to get us to stay in another room completely disregarding the contamination of the room and refused a refund claiming that booking.com is who needs to issue it. I stayed four nights with a Saturday very late night arrival through Wednesday very early morning departure in December 2025 to fulfill a requirement for staying four overnights in Detroit on a very tight budget. This property appeared from searching to be my best option. High rating I provide here is based on the context of the economical overnight option the Viking Motel tries and succeeds to be. My stay was very satisfactory and exceeded my expectations for low cost accommodations. It was for me clean, safe, secure, and quiet, with a convenient location that's walking distance from downtown Detroit. While I appreciated the convenient location, friendly staff, functional wifi, HDTV cable TV, reasonably comfortable bed, fridge + microwave in the room and decent hot water, I did not appreciate the mould, ants, roaches, hard to regulate temperature (it was always either too hot or too cold), evidence of decay that was painted over, broken furniture, the giant gap under the door that brought cold air in (and also giant outside bugs), dirty floors and the $100 per night price. Plus, the city condemned part of the property because it's falling apart. I wasn't expecting the Ritz Carlton, but I was expecting better than this. I'll let you make your own decision on whether or not to stay here, but I never will again.

We stayed here last year to go to a pistons game. It's 5 blocks from the little ceasar arena. The location is great cause we can go and have a few drinks and walk back to the hotel and not have to worry about parking in detroit. The rooms are clean. It's not a brand new place but everything is clean working. Beds are rock hard but not staying a week. We will probably be back for a concert or another game.
