This grand old hotel is getting tired. I'll rate the spa separately as it was a great experience and well worth returning. The hotel's shared spaces remain comfortable and ruggedly luxurious, with huge fireplaces, tons of chairs, great service. Our stay included breakfast so we did enjoy that immensely - not cheap at $35 each if not included, but really really good food, wide selection, and great service. Our main disappointment was the hotel room. It was...fine. Great views (we upgraded to a mountain view and recommend that), but at about $400/night (high for the Asheville area) we were expecting something that would feel ... elevated. Instead I would say that one could not distinguish it from any other mid-range chain hotel room. Just ok. Bed was also just OK - didn't come close to the W

This is a beautiful hotel. Worth the $30 parking fee to visit but not worth the expense of staying there. They have a beautiful spa but apparently you must book it months in advance. I am not into scarcity travel. I do not want to be on a computer at midnight waiting on the first chance to get spots. Ordered a smoothie from the patisserie and he went to a machine and dispensed a frozen blob. Told us when we checked in that we received an upgraded room. The upgrade was the farthest room from the lobby and elevator they had and right below the restaurant. The bed and pillow are better at a Holiday Inn. The staff is friendlier at Dollar General.

Positive: The location, history and the amazing spa. Great customer service. I received two emails from the hotel management after I checked out to make sure my stay was satisfactory. That shows me they care about their guests Negative: I feel the rooms were somewhat outdated. Also, it’s important to book spa appointments as soon as possible because they book up quickly. I feel the hotel should inform guests of this. I suggested this when I responded to the follow up emails.

I’ve stayed at this hotel many times over the past decade. I’ll start by saying it used to be one of my favorite hotels in the world. There is a lot to do, has some great history to it. It is definitely outdated and for the price you pay I think they can afford some upgrades to the rooms while keeping the old classy vibe it tries to maintain but I digress. The reason I’m giving this place a 1 star is because of the spa situation. I’ve been trying to book since November for two spa day passes. I seem to be on hold multiple times for 15+ minutes before giving up and when I do get through to someone they give a date or two, then the dates either don’t have hotel availability or it requires a multi-day stay if you want to book?? Then I finally get a date that works, try calling back less than

Visited the hotel for the Friday night seafood buffet. They accept reservations, so make one in advance to ensure you do not have a long wait. Lots of variety on the buffet, and well worth the $60 charge. The waiter was subpar but would not hinder my choice to return. The ambiance of the hotel is quite nice. We enjoyed drinks from the bar that were also family-friendly and delicious. The seating in/around the fire place was very relaxing. The view from the outdoor area was beautiful!
