Super 8 by Wyndham Houghton Lake

We stayed here from the UP to attend a funeral in Sterling Heights, so we didn’t spend a lot of time at the hotel. We just needed a place to sleep for 2 nights. The pool was closed, which was not a big deal for us, but based on other reviews we read, this is a common issue at this hotel. The breakfast was a particularly highlight for us, as we had long days of driving and we didn’t have to worry about finding food in the mornings. Unfortunately, the second night, we discovered our room smelt like marijuana smoke. Dispute there being a no smoking policy on the premises, several guest did not follow this. We saw several people smoking right outside our window, and we believe some were smoking in their rooms, which caused the smell to drift into our room through the bathroom vent. Once we t

The lobby and hallways were clean, but the room was unsatisfactory to say the least. The young woman at the front desk was very helpful and extremely friendly despite having to put up with the evening rush, but I can’t say the same about the older lady who was there later in the night. The bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean, but the floors were filthy and the bathroom sink looked like it wasn’t even touched. I was told the owners were renovating the property, but I personally believe their staff needs more work than then building. I didn’t get a chance to talk to the manager, but I wasn’t impressed by anyone other than the 20-year-old that checked me in. I’ve stayed at so many Super 8’s over the years. This one stands out because it’s just very well kept up, clean and in a nice quiet area. Kudos to management for making that effort. Though literally right off the highway it’s set back enough that you don’t see all the businesses near by when you are in the parking lot or hear cars and trucks roaring by from your room. Though everything you need is minutes away. One of my favorites in Michigan.

Positive: I like the staff, pool, soda vending machine, and ice machine. There is designated smoking section outside for smolers. Negative: The air conditioner was very load and the floors could have been cleaner.

The rooms are in decent condition, and the whole place seems fairly clean. I did notice they had a pool, but unfortunately it was out of order, half full, and definitely has had standing water for a minute. The staff however, are amazing! Very patient, kind, and willing to go the extra mile to ensure that your stay is as comfortable as possible.
