Strater Hotel

We just celebrated our anniversary at the Strater Hotel in Durango, and it was exactly what a romantic getaway should be. From the moment you walk through the doors, you feel like you’ve stepped into another era—in the best way possible. The Victorian charm, the historic details, the creaky wood floors, the antique furnishings… it all creates this warm, intimate atmosphere that you simply don’t get at modern chain hotels. It feels authentic, not staged. Our room was cozy and beautifully appointed, with thoughtful touches that made it feel special rather than standard. We were so excited to stay here with the historical significance to Durango and the location. The hotel decoration is amazing and everything is period correct. It was beautiful to look at. However, period furniture is so uncomfortable. The bed was comfortable but all of the chairs and places to sit in the room with very uncomfortable. We were there in October and the AC would not get the room below 76-78 degrees. We even slept with the window open when it was 45 degrees outside and the room never cooled down. It is a great experience to try once just to explore and say you have stayed, but I will stay someplace else next time.

Amazing spot! Right in the hub of all the life in Durango! Great parking. The hotel itself was part of the visits fun. We walked around one night looking for something to do, but around 8PM things tend to close down in Durango but it turns out the hotel had to fun we were looking for. We walked back to the hotel and heard lively ragtime piano music coming from the hotels connected saloon. We walked in, found a chair, and cheered along with the rest of the crowd enjoying the music and stories of Adam Swanson.

Stayed at the Strater Hotel and it was stunning. Built in 1887, and it shows in the best way. Full Victorian charm, rich details, and the kind of place that actually makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Later we went downstairs to the Diamond Belle Saloon. Awesome live band, great cocktails, and a fun old-west vibe without feeling cheesy. Full disclosure: I did not sleep great… mostly because I made the mistake of reading that the hotel is haunted 😅. That one’s on me. That said, if you’re into historic hotels and places with real character and stories, this one is absolutely worth staying at. I’d recommend it without hesitation.

Beautiful well kept hotel. our room was beautiful. Its an antique hotel so lots to see. They have a bar, 2 restaurants, food was ok. The staff in the front did not seem very interested in giving us a tour or providing any information when asked. The hospitality was not the best. It did not feel very welcoming and mind u we stayed 4 nights, no one followed up to see how things were going at any point in our stay. I must say it was very convenient and centrally located.
