Mount Rogers National Recreation Area

For starters, the area is beautiful. We will definitely be returning. However, the National Park portion of the area that we explored is largely abandoned. The campsites were overgrown. The bathrooms were closed. The "beach" was empty. We enjoyed the emptiness, but were sad to see how it has been so neglected.

Just a beautiful area...highest peak in Virginia...nice welcome center....checked out some side roads, Hurricane Campground which is definitely off any main road, and drove the tight one lane gravel roads winding up and down the mountain...just an awesome time....noticed horse trails as well...that would be fun!

I'm not a camper (I don't like dirt or bugs) and I'm not a hiker (same), but I can appreciate a beautiful view and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is chock full of scenery. Well managed forests and roadside pullouts and fantastic views of green valleys make my day. Plenty of opportunities for camping and hiking and maybe even fishing, if those are things that interest.

We loved it here! Just a beautiful place with abundant trails for hiking.
