Stopped on the way home from Carlsbad. What a gem! We went to Great Sand Dunes National Park last summer, and as gorgeous as that was, this was a lot more fun! The sand is so soft and cool. The dunes are right next to the parking lot and the campsites. Absolutely gorgeous place. It takes a while to find the perfect spot for sledding, but once you do, it's a thrill! A lot of the reviews I read said the park sleds weren't very good, but we found that they were great once you figured out how to balance properly (hint: lean back a bit and pull the front up) and kept them waxed. It only costs $6 to rent one, and $1.25 for a little brick of wax. Wasn't impressed with the showers. As much as we love camping at TX state parks, I'm glad this was just a day trip. I tried to rinse off before getting

YOU NEED TO GO HERE! Whether you make your whole road trip about coming to this awesome state park, or just make it part of another trip like we did, you have to come to Monahans Sandhills and rent a sand disc from the visitor center (or bring your own) to sled down the sand dunes with your friends or family. This was my daughter’s #1 memory from our whole trip and we spent 3 days in Big Bend - but apparently sledding down the sand dunes beat out all the cool hikes and stuff we saw (she’s still talking about it). Honestly, this was so affordable and could be hours and hours of fun, along with the beautiful desert views that you could enjoy on hikes. Probably not as fun in 100+ degree temps, but being there around the New Year was amazing. 10/10 place to stop and have a ton of fun!

Probably the prettiest place in west texas. The dunes are well kept up, and can be fun for kids and adults! I actually brought my rc car and zipped it around the dunes some while the kids played and my son played with his rc car some too. Its sand as far as the eye can see! And believe me when i say the dunes are steeper than the pictures make them out to be! Definitely could be fun for the sledding and stuff as well! Although we didnt do it.

Can't believe I've never been here before! Was very calm in the evenings and surreal looking. If you look at it at the right angle it looks like a different planet. I'm too old to go down the sandhills in a disc so I didn't try that, but there were some kids that that looked like they were having a great time doing it. Next time I go. I'm going to spend a little more time in the visitor center but they were getting ready to close so I went down to my campsite. Would be a great place as a backdrop for photos. Very awesome spot!!

We ❤️❤️ this state park! We’ve been there twice. Quiet, easy RV sites to pull in. Our goldens love to play on the sand hills. With a Texas State Park pass it on cost $15 for the night! The park rangers were all nice. They were replacing the metal shelters/canopies over the picnic tables. The visitor center is nice. They have minimal items in their store but we got an ornament since we really like the park. 😎
