Magnuson Hotel Durham Skyland

I take pride in my reviews and feel this is one that's necessary. I did set up my travel plans for here, slightly concerned with the negative cleanliness comments and all I really needed was a clean room and freezer. I prayed. I have been well traveled for decades and can tell you that for the price point and what I got, it was equal. I did get into one of the renovated rooms so it was pretty clean. Few negative things: walls are thin, it didn't have soap for my hands (or shower if you needed) but I had that with me so I didn't really care. This non smoking king room didn't have a small coffee maker and I had to take a total of a 15 minute drive to get a cup of coffee. It's all small easy things to fix. A little expensive for barely the basics. Very quiet. Mostly full of out of town crews so not many rooms available. Pretty clean but there was hair on the shower wall. Six bars of soap but no shampoo. Non-smoking room but smelled like smoke. Demo mode on the TV that I couldn't remove. Curtains left a big gap when closed and when the heat/air is on it mostly blows up the curtain instead of out into the room. Gap under the door big enough for a snake to get thru.

This motel was not what I expected, but looked enough like it in the picture that I booked it. (I used to stay in a Best Western on top of a hill somewhere around here, but it seems to be gone - at least I can't find it). ||||This is a very basic hotel - outside entrances - scuffed furniture - "old fashioned" tlie bathroom that looked like mine at home - but the rooms were clean, had just enough amenities (Refrigerator and microwave, but I had to use my own hair dryer - there might have been one available on request - I don't know). The "breakfast" consists of coffee and some packaged danishes. But what do you want? The wifi worked. ||||The one complaint was the way the company handled my reservation. Booked for the cheap price but when arriving the front desk was very rude and demanded $250 for a deposit. The booking app said there was a $100 deposit so we were afraid the front desk was trying to scam us and pocket the money. We went fine the road to the microtel and the stay was fantastic. Our booking app tried to get the hotel to refund our money that same night and the front desk person refused. So she got $60 of my money for doing absolutely nothing. The place smelled horrible and was not able to be stayed in anyway. Just awful.

My wife and I were looking for a lower cost hotel while we interviewed/ explored the area. The hotel was clean and well maintained, with WiFi and cable included. It was a little dated, but I would say this was probably the most quality I got for such a price. The room was small, but exactly what we needed. We would absolutely stay here again and especially unbeatable given the price.
