House of Ludington - Permanently Closed Due to Fire 12/2025

If you're looking for something different & interesting, this is the place. It's a very old hotel with squeaky floors. The amenities are limited, so bring your own hair dryer and soap. We stayed in the Nelson Ludington Suite and loved it. We were very comfortable. The staff are very nice & helpful.

This place is a dive ! Not handicap accessible and after you book is when it tells you that and then there's no refunds! Went in our room before we were even checked out attempted charging us additional fees.. I have zero positives accept the fact cool people stayed there many years ago. We took my mom up north to see the waterfalls and traveling late, there was also construction which made it harder to find .. I think for safety this place should be shut down the fire exit upstairs was full of black mold and clutter no way out if there was a fire. Also the rooms are nothing like the photos online it's old and cringy, very deceiving ! Please think twice if you think about staying here.

We stayed at the House of Ludington this past weekend for a wedding in the area and were very happy with or visit. I see some reviews complaining about the state of this hotel not being NEW I guess you would say. Well guess what... if you couldn't figure out that one of the oldest hotels in the country wasn't going to feel like it was built 3 years ago, you're the dense one. Also, for anyone that can add 2+2 together, you should be able to figure out this place won't be as up to date as the places that charge $250 a night. Seriously people. We’d booked the Nelson Ludington suite, but upon arrival found that one of three external doors would not lock. We called the general manager who came quickly and he eventually managed to get the door locked. None of the lights/outlets in the living room worked, and he couldn’t locate the issue to correct it. We chose to leave and find other accommodations, and our pre-payment was refunded without question. The photos on their website don’t really portray the condition of the property. The hotel is in a great location downtown across from the lake, but it is in very sad shape and needs a full renovation. What an amazing hotel! Built in 1865 you can feel the history. Set right on Lake Michigan we watched the sunrise. Our room was huge! Tyler was a wonderful host and made adjustments for our mobility challenges. Thank you for a fantastic night in Escanaba!
