Holiday Inn VA Beach-Oceanside (21st St) by IHG

This is a difficult review because ultimately the manager was very nice. But this hotel willingly rented me a room knowing there is no hot water in the hotel. Apparently the desk clerk was supposed to hand me a note when I checked in informing me that the hotel has no hot water. Instead they only have a lukewarm water similar in temperature to something you might wash your hands with in a public bathroom. I measured the temperature of the water and it was 89 degrees. I also measured the swimming pool water temperature and it was only a few degrees cooler. I spent more than 75 minutes on the phone with customer service at IHG corporate. The Philippines call center provided no help. They called the hotel, spoke to the front desk clerk who was not qualified to make any decisions, then told me

If you are looking for an oceanfront stay at a decent hotel and don't require much maintenance, then this location is good for you. The staff are pretty friendly. The restaurants is good when they stay open. Parking is OK. If the lot gets full then there is a bigger lot that is pretty secure right across the street. The Room was not particularly clean in some areas such as hair on beds, the shower, and washcloths. The shower also had dirt on the floor and there was trash left in the toilet. You can also tell that people had previously killed bugs on the wall or ceiling because there were marks there and there was still a dead book on one of the walls. As expected, all parking spaces in front of the hotel were taken when we arrived Saturday afternoon. The overflow lot is close by but a squeeze. The cheerful agent checked us in quickly and assigned us rooms 805 and 806. 805 was ok except for having no safe, a noisy a/c (dated window unit), and paint peeling on the balcony. 806 has a safe but was dusty (Keurig in particular) and smelly. Our daughters described the smell as that of a teenager bedroom not receiving fresh air for weeks. Opening the window or running the a/c did not help. ||We had breakfast included in our rate, and it was the typical mid-range hotel buffet. Traveling for work, I try to mix up a few things and actually plan to start doing official reviews of hotels as I travel. Consensus: Not upset I stayed but will try elsewhere next time. Room was nice, balcony looking at the ocean beautiful, sound of waves through the night; calming. The staff were pleasant, breakfast is NOT included like most Holiday Inn IHG hotels. I find this is important to know when booking. I was able to walk to a grocery store and buy a bunch of food. Location: On the water, walkable to restaurants, things to do, and places to see. I loved the location and would love to return. Just finding another local hotel that does not feel like I'm taking a cold plunge and/or has a considerable fitness center. Found this place to book for a stay at new years night eve thru the Peabodys nightclub website with a very good discount price ($99+tax)! The room was well kept and the VA beach Atlantic Oceanside view was spectacular and certainly the best balcony view that we’ve ever experienced in all of our stays over the years! The bathroom was a bit small though and there was no hand shower. Other than this, a very good stay. The receptionist was very friendly as well! We checked in at around 11.30pm and was able to get parking as well.
