Winter camping was terrific! I met the couple who maintain the site while I was there. They were very nice. There were two portable toilets, and two of the restroom buildings were open on one side. There is one old-fashioned hand-pump water station. I was told it is potable; however, I ran the water I pumped out through my filter because it was cloudy. There was a good amount of snow on the ground, and the temperatures got down to 10 degrees during my stay. The site's road was plowed, and the sites were minimally plowed, all on packed snow and ice. So, bring a snow shovel. The river was frozen over and covered with snow, except for a few openings, so it was rather quiet. I slept in a tent, and there was enough snow and trees to muffle the next-site-over's guest's little generator
Love this campground in the summer but I LOVE that it's open in the winter. They do a great job plowing and it's so wonderful to have access to the bathrooms/portapotty while enjoying a camping trip in a winter wonderland. Thank you to all that maintain this beautiful campground year round!
My fiancé and I actually went here in June of 22. I had thought I wrote the review I intended but just noticed I did not. Better late than never. We chose a drive in campsite even though we had a tent rather than the walk in ones mentioned in other reviews. The site was spacious with the fire ring and picnic table. There was very easy close by access to a river which we loved. But most importantly, the hosts were wonderful, very friendly and accommodating. This is so important to me that checking the reviews on Trip Advisor and noticing some concerning reviews about hosts in area campgrounds, helped me finalize my choice in where to camp, and I made the right choice with no regrets, Hancock campground with its peaceful and rustic charm, supervised by friendly staff is my go to
This is a great campground, the sites are flat, well cleared, good sized, and separated enough to just barely hear your neighbors, if you have any. It's also fantastic that they're one of the only campgrounds open year-round.
Extremely accessible location. Just a few miles beyond Lincoln and Loon mountain, and immediately after you enter the White Mountains National Forest. The campsites on the south side of the highway, especially those adjacent to the Pemigewasset River, are great. It's definitely not a family campground or State Park, the bathrooms are basic, no electricity, but it's a great launching point for hiking or exploring the river. The person staffing the campgrounds was friendly and it was nice having firewood that was dry and readily available, cash only.
