Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Northfield, MN

Good: fresh room, quiet, good breakfast, pleasant staff Bad: New thermostat/air conditioner/heat was impossible to regulate. It shifted very frequently from too cold to too hot. I finally disabled it by flipping the circuit breaker on the wall plug. In the morning the room was cold, of course. I could find no way of reengaging the thermostat. All this is a real step backward from rational HVAC control. The room could have used a floor lamp. We are both readers and prefer to be in one bed, with light on both sides.

We have never stayed at this property as we heard it was average. It was $330.00 a room night for a very basic and dated hotel. Clearly, they gouge the customer when there is an event in town. I called 5 days ahead of check in to be considerate and cancel the reservation as my son was sick with strep and we would not be traveling to Northfield. I notified the "manager" Angie that we could provide a Drs. note when she informed me that there is a cancellation fee of one room night. $330.00 for a 5-day notice is Ludacris. Angie said " we are trying to run a business here and you Olaf and Carlton College people do this to me all of the time" I have no idea why she was so personally affected by this. I use Country Inn and Suites on a normal basis because most of the time I have good experiences. This particular hotel does not live up to the name. There are railroad tracks maybe 30 yards behind the hotel and even though the hotel was basically empty, they placed me on the bottom floor facing the tracks. I counted 6 passings of the train while present, both late at night and early morning. To make things worse, the bathroom had a strong odor of sewer and I had to keep that door closed to cut it off. There were also cobwebs throughout the room. I will drive a little further to stay somewhere else next time.

Clean, safe, friendly service. Comfy beds. Prompt housekeeping. Nice breakfast. Great location. Only issue we had is the noise from the train that runs behind the hotel - they blow their horn at all hours, including middle of the night - but that is not the hotel’s fault, obviously.

Size: Our room was very small and did not have adequate space for opening/storing luggage for 2 adults. There was only a desk chair for sitting- not adequate for 2 adults. The bathroom was small without enough places provided to hang towels/ wash clothes. No room on the vanity to put personal items or anywhere else in the bathroom. Cleanliness: The tub/shower had evidence for mold/ black stains where walls contacted the tub. (Pictures available). The shear curtains were really dirty on the edges. (Pictures available). The wall heat/cool unit blew the curtains out into the room when the fan was blowing (almost continuous!) and you could not walk along side of bed without having the dirty curtains touch you.
