We love this place, we only stayed overnight one time but the upper pond is one of our favorite day hikes in the south counties. It's a great resource for through hikers, thanks to all the volunteers that make it possible.

This Appalachian Trail Shelter is managed by Massachusetts A.T. volunteers for use by A.T. hikers. 16 cabin bunks and 10-12 adjacent tentsites/tent platforms are available on a first come--first served basis. Volunteer Caretakers are at the Cabin when it is open--generally mid-May to mid-October. Tent sites and cabin porch are available year round. Please keep dogs on leash. Dogs are permitted in the Cabin, only with permission from the Caretaker. Please check in with the Caretaker when arriving and follow the posted rules. The area can be busy on weekends and in peak season (early July to mid August). Plan to arrive by early afternoon during those times for the widest choices of bunk/tent space. The Cabin area provides pond access for swimming, as well as untreated drinking water,

What a beautiful place to hike to/camp. Ranger cabin was still open (until Columbus Day) so that meant free use of the canoes and pancakes with coffee in the morning. Tent sites have wooden platforms and bear boxes to store your food. One of the sites also has a picnic table. There is a dish washing station and a fire pit by the ranger cabin and the they are very friendly and informative. Couldn't ask for a better spot to enjoy this part of the Berkshires!

For a cabin to spend the night at along the Appalachian Trail, it's very good as compared to lean-tos and tent platforms.

Cabin is 5 stars & almost all caretakers are great, exception in the one this week. I hike there a lot & I have hiked the AT as well. Today, OCT 6, 2022, we had a bad experience with an aggressive dog of the current caretaker, she has 2 loose dogs & refuses to put them on a leash. The aggressive one was trying to get at ours (which was on a leash bc it is considerate thing to do on a trail with hikers), I said she should put hers on a leash & she says she does not have to. She then put them in the cabin (which has a sign for no trail dogs). I found her very inconsiderate & feel bad for any hikers staying this week, especially if they have a hiking dog. As an AMC member of many years, I agree with the ATC on dogs on trails on a leash, it is consideration of others.
