The Harlem Flophouse

We stayed five nights between Christmas 25 & New Year four adults & two children under 4, we traveled from the UK and got a subway (A line) direct from JFK to 125th street. Then it’s just a short walk to 123rd street and this house. The host was excellent the house was magical old world charm, our rooms were large and very comfortable. It was bitterly cold outside but the house was always warm. The two shared bathrooms were always clean and again quickly decorated. We found this a wonderful location to explore NY just above Central Park it gave us a different perspective on the city than previous trips stopping down town, with easy walking into Central Park or catching the subway to down town. (Note there is a max weekly charge when using the subway so you’ll never spend more than about $3

We had a wonderful three-night stay at the Harlem Flophouse. The location was fab, right in the centre of Harlem —just a short walk to the subway and surrounded by great cafés and spots to grab a bite. The host was exceptionally friendly and welcoming, which made the stay feel even more comfortable. The room was charming, and the shower was absolutely brilliant—powerful and refreshing, perfect after a day out exploring the city. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a unique and relaxing place to stay in Harlem!

I'm writing this review not out of spite, but as a warning to future travelers about what you can expect when medical emergencies beyond your control require flexibility and basic human decency.||We had booked the Thelonious Monk room at the Harlem Flophouse and were genuinely looking forward to our stay. However, two weeks before our trip, I suffered a serious fall that left me unable to walk and requiring surgery. This wasn't a change of plans due to finding a better deal or simply changing our minds—I was physically incapacitated and facing a medical procedure. Not really a “flophouse” - more like an old fashioned guesthouse. If you love antiques and a cozy bed & breakfast (without the breakfast!) then you will love this place! Very clean & comfortable with just the right amount of funky vibe (jazz music playing on the radio, soft lighting, unique decor). The beautiful Architectural Details of this brownstone row house are well preserved and truly stunning. Staying here is like stepping back in time! The local owner is friendly and clearly cares for this old house. The rooms are large and well appointed. The bedding was very comfortable. Liked the box fan in the room-it helped me sleep at night.
