The Fifty Sonesta Hotel New York

I recently stayed at this hotel and had a mixed experience overall. On the positive side, the location is quite good for the price, making it convenient for getting around. The staff were generally helpful and accommodating — I especially appreciated that they allowed me to store my luggage for a few hours after check-out, which made my travel plans much easier. However, the hotel itself does not meet the expectations of a 4-star rating. The condition feels quite outdated, with manual light switches and some lights not functioning properly. Although a handyman responded quickly, even late in the evening, the issue could not be fixed immediately and required a follow-up. The biggest concern was the bathroom condition. My review reflects a lot of what others have said. A clean, safe and friendly hotel. Nice rooms and lovely staff. Close to the subway and everything you can possibly need. It would be really nice, however…..||Unfortunately there is one big issue: Deposit.||When you check in, you’re charged $100 per room as a deposit (we had rooms, so charged twice). You’re told not to worry and you’ll receive this back automatically no later than 2 weeks after you leave.||I’m afraid like so many other reviewers, this isn’t the case. I’ve emailed 5 times and written twice via the web form and had only one response - which was a fob off. ||Clearly the deposit is actually an extra charge and they probably think most guests forget, and therefore a nice bit of extra margin for the hotel. ||My advice

Positive: Location Negative: There were numerous things wrong with the rooms at this hotel. We moved rooms twice, and still, ended up staying in a room that was visibly dirty, very smelly, and things in need of repair. I do not recommend staying at this hotel.

My younger sister and I previously stayed here during our trip to New York City, and I truly have nothing but amazing things to say about this wonderful hotel and its staff. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed and well taken care of. We ran into a bit of trouble at the very start of our trip, but the staff went above and beyond to help us — especially the doorman, Romeo. He was incredibly kind, attentive, and genuinely cared about making sure everything worked out for us. His professionalism and warmth immediately put us at ease and turned a stressful situation into a positive experience. I cannot say enough good things about the staff at this hotel. Incredibly kind and accommodating. The rooms, for the price and location, are top notch: clean, spacious, lots of amenities. I will definitely stay here again.
