Red Lion Hotel Monterey

Upon arrival we were greeted with a homeless man with his dog. The property wasn't very inviting. The staff was friendly. Walking to our room I noticed an ice machine that I needed to use but it was broken and the only one that worked was on the 3rd floor...... Once we opened the door I noticed the bathroom..... KEEP THIS IN MIND WHEN BOOKING THIS HOTEL!!!!. If you're not fully comfortable with anyone staying in the same room don't book this hotel. If you like privacy don't book this hotel. The bathroom doesn't have a regular door that opens ond closes. It has a BARN DOOR that slides side to side!!!!! It has about an inch and a half gap so anyone walking by can see through the gap. The pictures definitely make the property look a little nicer than what it looks like in person. My first impression wasn’t great when the girl working behind the counter seemed a little more interested in her phone. She also didn’t seem like she worked there. She was dressed very casual and other than her being behind the counter, you really wouldn’t know. No greeting or friendliness. We got our 2 keys, gave a card for incidentals and was told to walk up 3 stars, go straight and that’s where our room was. In our room, we found a missing towel bar, which was located in the closet. This property reflects a serious breakdown in basic hospitality, sanitation, and management oversight. I checked in late Friday evening and was assigned a room that was clearly not prepared for occupancy. The pull-out sofa contained used bedsheets, the couch was visibly stained, and the room showed heavy buildup and grime. The bathroom raised immediate concerns: the bathtub and surrounding tiles had significant buildup and discoloration consistent with possible mold, suggesting the space had not been properly cleaned or wiped down between guests. Equally troubling was the lack of operational readiness. Positive: The office staff, great. Hotel employee was especially helpful and kind. Negative: The room looked clean at first glance. After 5 min of walking on the floors our feet were filthy. " Stuff splattered on bathroom walls. Walkway outside the room was not swept the whole time we were there, trash and debris everywhere.

We booked our room online for a pet friendly king room. As has become my practice when booking online, I called the property direct to confirm the reservation and to reiterate that we have a dog with us. Also, in the online notes our notes we stated we were bringing our dog and requested a first floor room. When we arrived, we were given a third floor room with double beds. I went back to the desk to ask for a first floor room, only to be told none were available because that is the “pet friendly” floor. I told him, “I have my dog with me”. He said he did not have any pets listed in our reservation. I told him I had called and confirmed, and asked again for a first floor room. He was able to put us on the second floor, which was ok.
