Hatfield-McCoy Lodge

I’ve stayed in worse places, but… that’s not exactly glowing endorsement. Tile floors not terribly clean; kept shoes/sock on the whole time. Just shabby.

The pictures on their listing are not today's or taken in the last 10 years. Holes in the bathroom ceiling and wash area covered with square metal plates. Burn marks in the flat edge of the bathtub and counter top by the sink. The old wall heater in the bathroom wall was all rusty and didn't even work. Small silver dollar size holes in the paneling. There was no chair or table in the room. Only one night stand. Burn holes in the bedspread. The curtains were so old that the backing was peeling off, and they were missing most of the hooks that hold them up. To much for me, we left.

When a local vouched for the Hatfield-McCoy Lodge as a laid-back and welcoming place to stay, we felt assured, especially after days of travel with two young children and a dog. But from the moment we checked in, it was clear that this motel does not share in any tradition of hospitality. Our experience was characterized by indifferent management, inconsistent policies, and downright disrespectful interactions that would leave any weary traveler questioning their choice. After a long day of driving, with a 10-month-old who is still nursing and an almost 3-year-old in tow, we arrived expecting a relaxing environment. Initially, our check-in seemed straightforward—the front desk receptionist was polite enough and mentioned a pet fee, explaining it was for additional cleaning after animals.

The room was very clean, good bed, good pillows, soft quilt and sheets. Room was cold when went in and within minutes it was warm and toasty from the heart. Got queen size room and it had mini fridge and microwave. Tv worked great and great storage. Highly recommend for the price. A few weeks before this I paid double for a room at a nearby hotel and it was absolutely awful compared to this wonderful, little cozy place.

I am giving five stars as the kindness plus hospitality of the staff and owner were wonderful. They made sure we felt welcome. The room my brother and I stayed in was well taken care of given the low price per night. The room we stayed in had a low placed shower knob which would be very helpful if you of shorter stature. Overall good experience and would go see them again if ever down in the Appalachains again.
