We were in a pull-through campsite (26) at Hackberry campground for 3 nights in early March. The campground was at the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon which is very different than the Grand Canyon in Arizona. We enjoyed a beautiful drive down into the canyon to get to Hackberry campground. The campground was extra clean. We noted our camp hosts cleaning a campsite - they were so caring & wanting everything to be spotless. Our entertainment was 2 cute roadrunners. Our host said they'd named one Rascal & that I could name the other one!! How special!! Our host also offered to take our photo next to our rig at the campsite. They went above & beyond & seemed to enjoy the job of hosts!!❤️ We highly recommend Hackberry campground. The full hookups were fantastic in early March.
First time camping in here and glad we did.we are close to upper Comanche trail and a short bike(1mile) ride to lighthouse parking area, trail is not to technical for a beginner man biker tha will take you close to the lighthouse and the rest of the way
Campground and bathroom built by CCC over 90 years ago. Showing its age. Recently flooded and not cleaned. Rained one day and turned place into a mud puddle. One entrance isn't marked. There are unmarked trails behind campground. Deer and turkeys wander around. Animals dig trash out of dumpsters and no one cleans it up. Expensive place, they charge day use fee on top of camping fee. No camp host, no one checks anything. Sites have electric and water. Day use hikers park in campground and park police do nothing.
Hackberry campground was nice. Our site (#7) was a pull through and relatively level. Sites have water and electricity, with a dump site just outside the camp area. We had a picnic table, although it was not covered, which could be important in hotter weather.
We were at site 6. Great area. Water, power, fire pit, picnic table. Easy walk to the bathrooms. It was a wide-open space great for big groups. The river was dry but the kids still had fun exploring, and seeing all the animal tracks and catching frogs.
