Gale River Inn

Honestly, just what we needed and the wallet wanted for a place to crash for the night. No frills, clean room (albeit dated… but that makes it fun), beautiful view, and dog friendly. Update! Right after writing this review, I checked out and met the owner. Super nice young dude. I can’t imagine the previous negative reviews were about him… I think he just bought the place. They’re in the process of renovating the rooms for the summer. Will absolutely be back.

Gale River Motel is the perfect low-key escape in the heart of the White Mountains. The rooms are spotless, cozy, and thoughtfully equipped - everything you need. But the real showstopper? The jaw-dropping mountain views right outside your window. Peaceful, welcoming, and incredibly well-run—this place is a true hidden gem.

When we arrived, I went inside the front office, and there was no one around, so I called a number on the door, and as I exited the front office, a rude man outside looked at me and said, "You breaking and entering?" I said, "Excuse me?" He said, "The door was locked." I said, "No, it wasn't, it was open." From there, I said I was checking in, gave my name, and he asked if I got his text...I did not. So he then explained the room was open and keys were inside, and to leave the keys on the table when we leave the next morning....that was the start of my stay. The rooms are old, they smell, the decor is falling apart, and the drains in the sink and tub backed up anytime they were used. The heater works. Comfy beds and lots of towels 👍🏼. However, I wanted to use the mini fridge for some snack but it was dirty. I was able to manage but still. Also when I drop something under the bed I check and it looks like it hasn’t been vacuum?

The owner texted me on the day of arrival stating that we would be in a specific motel room and that the door would be unlocked with key on the dresser. If we needed anything, we were to text or call. Now, I'm not a fan of contactless check-in, but it was manageable. After our first day, we noticed there was no housekeeping. I can understand this. However, after a few days, we needed some new towels, soap, and trash bags, so I texted the owner. He said that it would be taken care of. After we returned to our room later that night, we noted that no one had replaced the towels, soap, etc. I walked over the office (which had a light on, but was normally locked) and found it open.
