Cheatham Annex MWR Campground

Had a specific site reserved. They called one hour before we were to arrive to say that they moved us to a different site because the person in our original site was extending. When we arrived, the site they transferred us to was occupied and two other sites were open. We asked to move to one of the two open sites and they said someone was due into one of the two, and the person in our assigned site was supposed to go into the other site. We ended up in one of the two open sites, but they still made the person in our site move to the other open site instead of just leaving that person in their site and giving the other empty site to the other person that was due in later that day. This is a nice campground to stay at for visiting the local area or for the night while traveling. Things you may want to be aware of are, the wifi and cell service are not very good. The water pressure is kind of low but we made it work. The bath house is getting old, not as clean as it could be and there is no AC. The laundry room has decent machines, but again no AC. The cost for the washers is $3.25 and Dryers are $2.00 quarters only.

This was a nice, shady park tucked back on the Cheatham Annex base. That kept it very quiet. We loved almost everything about it, with two exceptions. This was one of the worst campgrounds we've stayed at in terms of WiFi access, so if you need access for work (even if you have your own internet device, excluding Starlink), you'll be very frustrated. According to Wikipedia, CAX is home to the largest Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Outdoor Recreation facility on the East Coast. Based on this and the amount of money they are likely making on cabin rentals, etc., there is really no reason they couldn't provide camp WiFi that works and offers fast speeds and consistent access. This is a great campground and has wonderful cottages from one bedroom to five bedrooms. We rented a two bedroom cottage on the lake for just my wife and me because the one bedroom was already taken. It was terrific! Very comfortable with heat and air conditioning. The kitchen was fully equipped and we had a washer and dryer and screened in patio facing the lake. As with any rental there were minor issues (fireplace didn’t work, screens were torn in several spots) but it did not detract from our enjoyment of the place. Having been stationed in the Norfolk area for several years, I can tell you this is one of the best kept secrets for current and former military in the area. Highly recommend this as a weekend getaway or longer stay if you have the opportunity.
