Off grid camping with river access. We used the day use area for a lovely picnic at waters edge. Here you can watch rafters and kayakers enjoy the big eddy. An actually eddy where the rivers runs upstream.
This is remote and the roads are logging roads. Know your route before you embark on your trip. The folks at Big Eddy Campground are first class. The camp fees they charge are well worth it especially a hot shower! Sarah was very nice and willing to help me with all questions. I stocked up the fly library! The fishing was a little tough because of the warm water IMHO. I was there in September 27-29 and stayed in the Chesuncook Cabin and loved it! I drove a Subaru Legacy on the long road out from the West to pick up the Golden Rd east. Yes I had to go slow and yes the travel time was off the charts, but hey I was on vacation lol...
Great campground, split on either side of the river. One side is disconnected from the main office, considered the wild side, and is much quieter. Watch out for raccoons, they tried getting into our snacks two nights in a row. Showers are great, facilities are clean, and employees are very helpful and friendly. We love staying at this campground and it has a great location.
This is a really sweet campground on the Golden rd/Penobscot River. We happened to have a small site on the wild side next to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s fan-club-sing-along-party-boys, but they were cool enough when we asked them to turn the volume down at 10:30pm. The staff were wicked kind and allowed us to move to a further site that was glorious. (I can’t bring myself to share the site number.) The sound of the river is very soothing. Really dog friendly, and all seemed well managed. Same goes for the kids. Adirondack chairs, picnic tables, and plenty of space to swim in the river. We had epic weather, which didn’t hurt. I’d go back.
Most beautiful scenery and great people. Nice cabins and great shower facilities. It’s still camping but what a great way to get away from technology. Kids should experience this with their family. No cell service and no internet. Cell phones can still use emergency satellite services. The sounds of the river water going over the rapids is so peaceful especially at night.
