Amargosa Opera House Hotel

First, I rated it 5/5 because I had reasonable expectations of a 100+ old historic building - you aren't going to find luxurious suites or room service. You ARE going to find clean rooms and friendly front desk staff, and eclectic hand-painted murals everywhere. It's incredibly convenient to the main sights of Death Valley, at a reasonable price. There's cheap gas and food just 7 miles up the road at Longstreet casino, too. Get a room on the colonade side, and you can unload your car straight into your room. Be sure to take one of the twice daily tours of the hand-painted Opera House, too.

I recommend taking a tour to understand what a historic and magical place this is. The rooms may be basic and you have to drive to get food, but honestly, that’s part of the charm. This place has great character. I stayed here three nights and it was a lovely experience.

Alright I feel so confused by the other positive reviews on here that I would be remiss to not tell my experience here too because I don’t think this hotel is safe or up to code for human occupancy at all. First off, every staff member we interacted with was incredibly lovely and warm. So no complaints there. Second, the opera house tour was incredible. Such a fascinating bit of Death Valley history and a pleasure to see in person. However the hotel is another story. The smell of raw sewage is strong and vile throughout the main areas and the hallways. Our room smelled okay for the first night but that was probably due to the massive air freshener that was plugged into one of the only outlets in the room. Well no TV, water was either piping hot or stone cold in the shower, not sure but the place looked like it had some , flooding issues, plug in bedroom not working, beds were comfy though!!

I did not stay here, but there are SOME rooms available, BUT it is an absolute ghost town 😅 Literally. Every building but this one is abandoned and completely vacant. I absolutely LOVE the history of the entire place though!!! Very cool place to check out, if you're out exploring rural abandoned places 👌
