Alva Hotel & Restaurant

Bed BUGS! Terrible! An elderly acquaintance of mine who is having a hard time right now, stays here and is so scared about his situation. He has no other options. But just because the Alva is a private business and affordable for patrons, this DOES NOT MEAN THEY BARE NO RESPONSIBILITY to maintain their location and the rooms they rent!! His room is infested with bed bugs. Please do not stay here or support them.

The Alva is actually a restaurant, hotel & grocery store, and is owned by a very friendly & kindhearted family from Cairo, Egypt. The restaurant's head cook walked with me to ensure my nightime safety in the neighborhood per ownership's request, & he was a fascinating conversationalist. The restaurant & grocery are street level. The Alva serves wonderful food at a very reasonable price. Hotel rooms are upstairs (no handicap access). This establishment is located right next to the Amtrak station, and truly caters to all walks of life. Weekly/monthly rates are available. One night's stay costs $40. While the ownership & staff of the Alva would have to work very hard to get the upstairs hotel portion of this 100+ yr old building up to the traveling standards of the U.S. mainstream publi

WORST experience anyone could have in Iceland. We arrive late at night and we could not find the hotel because it does not have a sign or a number to the building. You will not find it. We had to hired an independent taxi at 2 am to try to find it, after 1 hour going in circles. Then you need a code to enter, they do not send clear instructions. The elevators do not work properly and the lobby smells bad. There is no one in the lobby to help and when you get to speak with someone, they are careless and they do not deliver on their words.

Friendly staff, but the restaurant (at 2:30 pm on a Friday afternoon) was filled with noisy vagrants. The place smelled not so great (like mold and 1940's wallpaper). My family was terrified. That being said the staff was patient with all the madness around and the fries and drinks were fine. I would not stay in this hotel though, which really is too bad because the it's right next to the train station and those vintage wrap around lunch counters are beautiful, so the genius that totally revamps and restores the place will be sitting on a gold mine IMO. But again at the moment it's a flop house with its own dive bar, so unless you're into that sort of thing I'd stay away. Or if you're a entrepreneur into vintage hotels, please buy it and show it some love ❤❤❤.

My stay at the Alva Hotel was profoundly disappointing, making it necessary to say this might be the worst hotel experience I've ever had. The elevator was broken, and the attitude of the hosts left much to be desired. I cannot recommend this hotel. Do yourself a favor and dont stay at this hotel ever in your life.
