We stayed in the Wilderness Pines Campground for one night to break up our drive back home. We unfortunately arrived after dark, but check in was easy from the phone at the check in point. Finding our site was easy as well thanks to well marked lot numbers painted on the road. The campground was quiet and mostly clean. The bathrooms were clean. Our site was not too cramped, though some of the sites were pretty close to one another. The walk to the beach and playground area was short and easy. Fire pit and picnic table at every site. I would love to visit another time when we have more time to relax! I can't speak to hookups, as we car camp and are completely self sufficient.
If you’re looking for a quieter slice of Northern Michigan without having to cross the bridge, Wilderness State Park might be your new favorite escape. We’re used to the slow pace and peaceful beaches of Lake Superior, so finding a Lower Peninsula park that still offers that kind of calm? Chef’s kiss. Tucked just far enough from Mackinaw to dodge the crowds, but still close enough for a day trip, this park is ideal if you crave a bit more solitude. We especially appreciated the designated tent sites that offer a little more breathing room—perfect for those of us who like our coffee with a side of birdsong, not diesel fumes. RV folks will find it less packed than some of the bigger resort-style parks, and beach lovers will appreciate the stretch of shoreline without the tourist stampede.
I am never disappointed with Wilderness state park. Its a great place, most recently redone, with modern facilities. I stayed at a hike-through site on the beach and it was gorgeous. I bit of caution, this park is strictly run. You won't be let in to your site until about 10 minutes before your reservation so plan on sitting around in one of the day parks if you arrive early.
A friend and I stayed at the wilderness site for a night while walking the NCT. The wilderness site is NOT at this waypoint, it’s only available on foot. We took a side trail to get to the campsite HQ to pick up our permit before continuing on. Plenty of room for a couple backpacking tents. Nice privy and bear hang but I’m not sure it’s worth $30. Next time I’ll stay along the lake in hopes to see the auroras that we missed when camped out in the woods.
Wilderness State Park offers stunning scenic views right on Lake Michigan. I highly recommend visiting for its beautiful landscapes and peaceful surroundings.
